RV Upholstery Repair and Replacement in Yorba Linda
RV upholstery work covers reupholstery of existing furniture, foam replacement, mechanism repair on theater seats and recliners, and full furniture replacement. Materials must meet vehicle interior flammability requirements and survive constant sun through large windows. Work runs $750 to $8,500 at 4 to 25 labor hours.
RV furniture lives a harder life than house furniture in one specific way: light. A coach has far more glazed area per square foot of floor than a house does, and that glass is often uncoated. Upholstery in a coach parked in Southern California takes a UV dose that no living room sofa ever sees.
That is why RV fabric fades, stiffens and splits on a timeline that surprises owners. It is also why material selection matters more than construction quality on this particular job.
What makes RV upholstery different from furniture upholstery?
Two things: flammability requirements and durability under UV and heat.
Interior materials in a motor vehicle are subject to flammability requirements that residential furniture is not. Foam and fabric used in a coach interior need to be specified for vehicle service. We source material that meets those requirements and we will not install residential furniture foam in a coach, regardless of how much cheaper it is, because a shop that does that is putting a customer at risk and pretending it saved them money.
Durability is the second half. Marine grade vinyl and solution dyed acrylic and polyester performance fabrics are engineered to hold color and flexibility under sustained UV. Standard residential upholstery fabric is not, and in a coach it will chalk, stiffen and split at the seams within a few seasons. The same applies to foam: standard 1.8 pound density residential foam compresses permanently under the heat cycling a closed coach delivers, which is why a cushion that was fine in March is flat by September.
- Foam and fabric specified for motor vehicle interior service
- Marine grade vinyl for wet bath adjacency and high wear seating
- Solution dyed performance fabric where a woven look is wanted
- High density foam, typically 2.2 to 2.8 pounds, for seating that holds shape
- UV stable thread, because standard thread fails before the fabric does
- Seat bases anchored to floor structure rather than to flooring
Theater seats, recliners and dinettes: what actually breaks?
On powered theater seating the failures cluster around three items. The actuator motor and its gearbox, the wiring at the hinge point where the harness flexes every cycle, and the control switch. Diagnosis is quick: with the switch held, if there is voltage at the motor and nothing moves, the motor or the gearbox has failed. If there is no voltage at the motor, the fault is upstream at the switch, the harness at the hinge, or the fuse.
On manual recliners the failure is normally the release cable, the pawl on the ratchet mechanism, or a broken weld at the scissor arm. Wall hugger mechanisms take more load than conventional ones because of the geometry and they fail more often.
On dinettes the failures are the conversion hardware, the table leg mounting into the floor, and the seat base itself. A dinette base bolted through flooring into a laminated floor core will eventually pull through, because the core does not carry a fastener. Bases need to be through bolted with a backing plate or anchored into structure. That is the fix that lasts.
Reupholster or replace: how do you decide?
Reupholster when the frame and mechanism are sound and the problem is the covering, the foam, or both. Reupholstery preserves a piece that already fits the coach and, on a fifteen year old motorhome, that fit is worth a lot because modern replacement furniture is dimensioned for modern floor plans.
Replace when the frame is broken, when a powered mechanism has failed and parts are no longer available, or when the owner wants a different function such as swapping a jackknife sofa for theater seating or a dinette for a fixed table and chairs. Replacement also lets us address weight, since a lot of factory furniture is heavier than it needs to be.
Cost bands: reupholstery of a dinette and cushion set runs $750 to $2,500 at 4 to 12 hours. A sofa or theater seat pair runs $1,500 to $4,500. Full furniture replacement across a coach runs $3,500 to $8,500 at 15 to 25 hours including removal, floor structure work at the anchor points, and installation.

Our Process and Timeline
Shop hours and calendar days are different things. These are the stages and the realistic duration of each.
- 011 day
Assessment and material selection
Frames and mechanisms are inspected, and fabric, vinyl and foam are selected from vehicle rated samples.
- 022 to 4 weeks
Quote and ordering
A written quote is produced and material is ordered. Fabric lead time is typically two to four weeks.
- 031 to 3 days
Removal and teardown
Furniture is removed, old covering is stripped, and frames and mechanisms are repaired or replaced.
- 043 to 8 days
Foam and pattern work
New foam is cut and shaped, patterns are taken from the original covers, and panels are cut and sewn.
- 052 to 5 days
Upholstery and assembly
Pieces are covered, mechanisms are reassembled and function tested through full travel.
- 061 to 2 days
Installation
Furniture is installed with bases anchored into floor structure, and powered seating is wired and tested.
Common Problems and How We Solve Them
The cushions went flat in one season.
SolutionResidential density foam under coach heat cycling. We replace with high density foam specified for vehicle service, which holds shape through the same conditions.
A theater seat stopped moving.
SolutionWe check voltage at the motor with the switch held. Voltage present means motor or gearbox. No voltage means switch, fuse, or the harness at the hinge point where it flexes every cycle.
The dinette base pulled out of the floor.
SolutionThe fasteners were into the laminated floor core, which does not hold a fastener. We reinstall through bolted with a backing plate or anchored into structure.
The fabric split at the seams while the fabric itself looks fine.
SolutionThread failed before the fabric did, which is what happens with non UV stable thread. Reupholstery with UV stable thread solves it permanently.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does RV upholstery cost?
Dinette and cushion sets $750 to $2,500 at 4 to 12 hours. A sofa or theater seat pair $1,500 to $4,500. Full furniture replacement across a coach $3,500 to $8,500 at 15 to 25 hours.
Can you reuse my existing furniture frames?
Usually yes, and it is often the better choice. Older coach furniture is dimensioned for older floor plans, so a sound frame that already fits your space is worth keeping and recovering.
Why does RV upholstery fade so much faster than house furniture?
Glazed area. A coach has far more window per square foot of floor than a house, and much of it is uncoated. The UV dose is several times higher, which is why solution dyed and marine grade materials are the right specification.
Can you convert a jackknife sofa to theater seating?
Yes. We measure the space, confirm the recline clearance with slides in and out, and anchor the new bases into floor structure with backing plates rather than into the flooring.
Do you use materials that meet vehicle flammability requirements?
Always. Foam and fabric in a coach interior are specified for motor vehicle service. We do not install residential furniture foam in an RV under any circumstances.
