Van and Camper Van Repair in Yorba Linda

Vans are unibody, meaning the body panels carry structural load rather than sitting on a frame. That makes correction less forgiving than frame work and makes ADAS recalibration mandatory afterward. Converted vans add a second problem: build value that is usually undocumented.

A Sprinter has no separate frame. The floor pan, sills, pillars and roof rails together are the structure, and an impact into any one of them redistributes load through the rest. There is no rail to pull against independently of the body.

That is the technical difference. The commercial difference is that half the vans we see carry a conversion worth more than the vehicle, and almost none of it is on the policy.

What makes van structural repair different?

On a body on frame vehicle the frame is the datum and the body sits on it. On a unibody, the body is the datum, which means the reference points you measure to are part of what may have moved.

Correction sequence therefore matters more. Structure is brought back working outward from the least damaged reference points, because correcting a secondary deformation before the primary one locks the error in permanently.

Why is ADAS recalibration not optional?

Because the sensors are mounted to the structure that just moved. Modern Sprinters carry radar behind the fascia, cameras in the windshield mount, blind spot sensors in the rear quarters and ultrasonics around the perimeter, all aimed relative to the vehicle centreline.

Straighten the structure and those aim points change. A radar a fraction of a degree off is worse than no radar because it reports confidently and incorrectly. Recalibration runs $285 to $1,800 at 1 to 7 hours and it is on every structural van estimate we write.

What happens to a conversion during a structural repair?

It usually comes out, and that removal and reinstallation is real labor that belongs on the estimate rather than being absorbed.

It also changes how the structure responds. Cabinetry bonded to sidewalls, a bed platform tied into the floor, a roof rack through bolted to the rails and several hundred pounds of water and battery low down all alter the load path in both the impact and the correction. We photograph and itemise the whole build at intake, which is the last moment that evidence is easy to produce.

    Interior build removed where structural access requires it. Components catalogued for reinstallation.

    Panel work and seam sealing

    Sectioning at factory designated locations, with corrosion protection and seam sealer restored.

Do you have to remove my camper conversion?

Often yes, where correction requires access to the structure behind it. We document and itemise the conversion before removal so the labor is on the claim rather than absorbed.
