Solid surface acrylic is the default and it earns that position on four counts. Weight, at roughly four to five pounds per square foot in half inch material. Seams, which can be chemically bonded and sanded to invisibility, so a counter can be built to any coach dimension without a visible joint. Repairability, since a chip or a scratch is sanded out in place with an orbital sander rather than replaced. And movement tolerance, because the material is thermoformable and slightly flexible rather than brittle.

High pressure laminate over a lightweight substrate is the lightest option and the cheapest, and it is entirely appropriate in a bath or a bunk area. Its weakness is the exposed edge, which will delaminate if water sits at a seam, and the fact that it cannot be repaired once damaged.

Quartz and granite are possible and we install them where an owner wants them and the payload supports it. Three centimeter quartz runs about 12 to 13 pounds per square foot, and two centimeter is around 8 to 9. Stone is brittle in bending, so it requires full continuous substrate support rather than the perimeter support a residential installation gets, and it needs isolation from the cabinet run so chassis flex does not load it. Sink and cooktop cutouts are stress risers and are the place stone cracks in a vehicle. Reinforcing rods across the cutout corners are not optional in a coach.

On solid surface, almost always. Chips are filled with color matched adhesive and sanded flush. Scratches and dull spots are restored with progressive abrasive and a finish pad. Cracks that run from a cutout corner are routed out, a patch is bonded in and sanded flat, and the corner is then reinforced from below so the crack does not return. Solid surface repair typically runs $300 to $1,200 at 2 to 6 hours and the repair is invisible when it is done properly.

On laminate, no. A chipped or delaminated laminate top is replaced or overlaid. Overlaying a sound laminate counter with a new solid surface or laminate skin is a legitimate and economical option where the substrate underneath is dry and flat.

On stone, a crack can be stabilized and filled with color matched epoxy but it will remain visible on close inspection. More importantly, a crack in a coach counter is a symptom. It means the support under it or the isolation around it was inadequate, and repairing the crack without correcting the support means repairing it again.

Templating is the whole job. Coach walls are not straight, not plumb and not parallel, and a counter cut to nominal dimensions will not fit. We template in the vehicle, transfer to material, and fit dry before bonding anything down.

Sinks and cooktops are relocated or reused depending on the plan, and plumbing and gas connections are handled at our mechanical and electrical rate of $260 per hour where they need to be broken and remade. Backsplash, edge profile and the transition to the cabinet run are detailed as part of the scope.

Cost bands: a bath vanity top runs $600 to $1,500. A galley counter in solid surface runs $1,800 to $4,500 at 8 to 18 hours. A full coach in stone with reinforcement and support work runs $3,500 to $6,500 at 15 to 25 hours. Repair only work runs $300 to $1,200.
