Fiberglass RV Roof Repair in Yorba Linda
Fiberglass roof repair covers gelcoat crazing, stress cracks, impact damage, soft laminate and penetration resealing on one piece moulded roofs. Because the roof is structural rather than a membrane over decking, repairs are laminate repairs and have to restore stiffness, not just surface. Work runs $900 to $9,500.
Owners buy fiberglass roofs specifically to avoid membrane maintenance, and they are right to. What they are not told is that a fiberglass roof still has penetrations, still has cap seams, and when it does fail it fails structurally rather than superficially.
That changes the repair. On a rubber roof a tear is a patch. On a fiberglass roof a crack is a break in a load bearing laminate, and filling it with gelcoat is cosmetic. The crack returns because the thing that caused it, a flexing panel with inadequate section at that point, has not been addressed.
What actually fails on a one piece fiberglass roof?
Four things, in rough order of frequency. Gelcoat crazing, which is a network of fine surface cracks from ultraviolet exposure and thermal cycling. Stress cracks radiating from a penetration corner, usually a skylight or a vent opening, where the laminate is locally weakened by the cutout. Impact damage from a branch or a low structure. And soft laminate, where water has reached a cored section and the core has failed.
Crazing is cosmetic until it is not. The crazing itself does not leak, but it does hold water in the surface and it does propagate over time. Left long enough it opens into genuine cracks. The correct treatment is to sand back the crazed gelcoat, apply new gelcoat or a modern coating system, and cut and polish it out.
Stress cracks are the diagnostic problem. A crack from the corner of a skylight opening is telling you the panel is flexing at that point, which means the reinforcement around that cutout is inadequate or has debonded. We grind the crack out to a V, laminate glass reinforcement in from below or above depending on access, and then finish the surface. Adding local stiffness is what stops it returning.
- Gelcoat crazing from ultraviolet exposure and thermal cycling
- Stress cracks radiating from skylight, vent and air conditioner cutout corners
- Impact punctures and gouges from branches and low structures
- Soft laminate where water has entered a cored panel
- Failed sealant at penetrations, exactly as on a membrane roof
- Cap to roof seam failure at the front and rear joints
How do you repair a crack so it does not come back?
By restoring the laminate, not the surface. The crack is ground out to a V or a scarf, the surrounding gelcoat is removed back to sound laminate well past the crack ends, and the crack ends are drilled to stop propagation. Glass reinforcement is then laminated in with the correct resin, feathered over a wide bond area rather than a narrow one, because a narrow repair creates a new stiffness discontinuity right at its edge and cracks again just outside the patch.
Where access allows, the more effective repair is from underneath. Laminating reinforcement to the inner face keeps the outer cosmetic surface intact and puts the added material where it does the most for stiffness. That is not always possible on a coach with a finished ceiling and an air gap full of wiring, which is why we assess access before quoting.
Finish is gelcoat or a modern topcoat, applied, blocked flat and polished into the surrounding surface. On a roof that has crazed generally, we often recommend refinishing the whole roof rather than a spot repair, because a polished patch in a matte crazed field reads worse than the original damage.
Does a fiberglass roof still need sealant maintenance?
Yes, and this is the misconception that costs owners the most. The roof panel does not need maintenance. Every hole through it does.
Air conditioner gaskets, vent flanges, antenna bases, solar mount feet, plumbing vents and skylights are all sealed with the same materials on a fiberglass roof as on a rubber one, and they age at the same rate. The front and rear cap seams and the roof to sidewall joints are also sealed joints with movement in them. An owner who believes a fiberglass roof is maintenance liberated will typically discover the truth through a ceiling stain around year eight.
The sealant rules are the same as on any roof. Self-leveling on horizontal flanges, non-sag on vertical faces, old sealant removed rather than covered, and no silicone anywhere. Fiberglass has one advantage: a properly prepared gelcoat surface gives excellent adhesion, better than chalked EPDM ever will.

- 02Crack ends drilled to arrest propagation before repair
- 03Laminate repair with glass reinforcement over a wide feathered bond area
- 04Reinforcement from the inner face where access allows
- 05Gelcoat or topcoat finish blocked flat and polished into the surrounding surface
- 06All penetrations resealed with self-leveling and non-sag as appropriate
- 07Cap and sidewall seam inspection and rebuild where required
Our Process and Timeline
Shop hours and calendar days are different things. These are the stages and the realistic duration of each.
- 011 day
Assessment and tap test
The roof is tap tested for soft and debonded areas and every crack is traced to its ends.
- 022 to 4 days
Access evaluation and quote
We determine whether inner face reinforcement is possible and quote the repair path accordingly.
- 031 to 3 days
Preparation
Cracks ground out, gelcoat removed back to sound laminate, crack ends drilled, surfaces cleaned for bonding.
- 042 to 5 days
Laminate repair
Glass reinforcement laid up with the correct resin, feathered wide, and cured before any finish work.
- 052 to 4 days
Finish and polish
Gelcoat or topcoat applied, blocked flat and polished into the surrounding roof surface.
- 061 day
Reseal and water test
All penetrations and seams resealed, the roof is water tested and interior readings are taken.
Common Problems and How We Solve Them
A crack was filled with gelcoat and came back in the same place.
SolutionThe laminate was never repaired, only the surface. We grind out, drill the crack ends, laminate reinforcement over a wide bond area, and add local stiffness so the panel stops flexing there.
The roof is crazed all over and a spot repair looks worse than the damage.
SolutionCorrect observation. On a generally crazed roof we sand and refinish the whole surface rather than polishing a bright patch into a matte field.
The owner was told a fiberglass roof needs no maintenance.
SolutionThe panel does not. Every penetration through it does, on exactly the same schedule as a rubber roof. We log every one and reseal on condition.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does fiberglass roof repair cost?
A single crack repair with finish work typically runs $900 to $3,000. Larger laminate repair, soft panel sections and full roof refinishing run $3,500 to $9,500, at our posted $210 per hour body and paint rate.
Why do cracks appear at the corners of my skylight?
A cutout removes material from a load carrying panel and concentrates stress at the corners. If the local reinforcement around that opening is inadequate or has debonded, the panel flexes there and cracks radiate outward.
Can gelcoat crazing be polished out?
Light crazing can be sanded and polished. Once the cracks have depth, the gelcoat has to be removed back to sound laminate and new gelcoat or a topcoat applied, then blocked and polished.
Is a fiberglass roof better than a rubber roof?
It is more durable and walkable and it does not chalk. It is also structural, so damage is more expensive to repair properly, and the penetrations need exactly the same sealant maintenance.
Can you repair a soft spot in a fiberglass roof?
Yes. We tap test to map the soft area, open it, remove failed core, laminate new reinforcement and core, and refinish. It is a larger job than a crack and we quote it after the tap test defines the extent.
