ADAS Recalibration on a Camper Van Is Not an Upsell
Modern Sprinter, Transit and ProMaster platforms carry radar, camera and sensor systems whose calibration depends on vehicle geometry being correct. Any structural repair, windshield replacement or work in a sensor area requires scan and recalibration as part of the repair.
Ten years ago a camper van repair was a body repair. Now it is a body repair plus an electronics procedure, and the second half is not optional.
That change caught a lot of the RV repair world off guard, because a Class B van gets treated as an RV by owners and as a modern automobile by its manufacturer.
What is actually on these vehicles
A current Sprinter, Transit or ProMaster carries some combination of:
- Forward radar, usually behind or near the grille
- Forward camera, usually at the windshield
- Blind spot radar in the rear quarters
- Parking sensors
- Cross traffic alert
- Lane keeping, which depends on the forward camera
- Adaptive cruise, which depends on the forward radar
- Automatic emergency braking, which depends on both
Every one of those has a calibrated relationship to the vehicle's geometry. The radar knows where straight ahead is because it was calibrated to a vehicle whose geometry was correct.
Why structural repair breaks it
Because the calibration reference is the vehicle itself.
Move a bumper mounting by a few millimetres and the radar is now pointing somewhere slightly different from where the software thinks it is. On a system making braking decisions at freeway speed, slightly different matters.
Same for a windshield replacement, because the forward camera mounts to it. Same for any quarter panel work near a blind spot radar. Same for any structural repair that moved anything at all.
Which means recalibration is not a separate service you might add. It is the last step of the repair, and a repair delivered without it is incomplete.
What owners report when it was skipped
Consistent set of symptoms, and if you have had body work done and any of these appeared, this is why.
- Warning lights for systems that were fine before
- Lane keeping that pulls or corrects inappropriately
- Adaptive cruise that brakes for nothing or fails to brake for something
- Blind spot alerts that fire with nothing there, or stay silent with something there
- Parking sensors reporting distances that are wrong
The dangerous version is the system that appears to work and is looking in the wrong place. No warning light, no obvious symptom, and a decision being made on bad data.
The conversion complicates it
This is where camper vans differ from cargo vans, and it is a real practical problem.
To repair the structure of a converted van you have to reach it, and a conversion has covered that structure with cabinetry, insulation, wiring, plumbing, lithium batteries and solar. All of it has to come out and go back.
On a professionally built conversion there is usually documentation. On an owner built conversion there is not, and creating it is part of the job: photographs and an itemised record before anything is removed, because a one off build cannot be reassembled from memory.
That documentation work is hours and it belongs on the estimate as R and I rather than appearing later.
The costs
At our posted rates, with diagnostics and programming at $285 per hour with a one hour minimum, refundable as a credit against an authorized repair.
- Collision repair on a van platform: $1,500 to $50,000 and up
- Panel replacement: $500 to $12,000 at 4 to 60 labor hours
- Structural and unibody repair: $750 to $20,000 and up
- ADAS scan and recalibration: $275 to $1,800 depending on how many systems are involved
- Conversion interior removal, documentation and refit: within build out and refit at $8,500 to $60,000 and up on a substantial rebuild
The recalibration figure is small relative to the repair. It is also the one most likely to be quietly omitted, because it requires equipment and procedure that a general shop may not have.
The question to ask any shop
"Do you scan before and recalibrate after, and is it on the estimate?"
If the answer is that it is not necessary, or that the systems will relearn themselves, find another shop. Some systems have dynamic calibration procedures, most have static ones requiring targets and a controlled space, and none of them recalibrate themselves after their geometry reference has moved.
If the answer is that they subcontract it, that is legitimate, and worth knowing because it adds a handoff to your timeline.

Where this is heading
More sensors, more dependence on them, and tighter tolerances on repair geometry. The direction is unambiguous.
For owners the practical consequence is that a camper van is a modern vehicle with a house in it, and repair shops that treat it as an RV with a chassis are going to fall behind on exactly the part that matters most for safety.
