Lauan Versus Composite Decides Your Repair Before Anyone Quotes It
Lauan plywood substrate absorbs water, swells and rots, which turns a leak into a substrate replacement. Composite substrate such as Azdel does not absorb water, so the same leak causes adhesive bond failure without rot. The repair path, cost and urgency differ substantially between the two.
Two coaches come in with identical symptoms: a soft area on the driver side sidewall, some visible waviness, water staining on the interior panel. Same age, same damage pattern, same entry point at the roof seam.
One is an $8,000 repair. The other is a $19,000 repair. The difference is what is behind the fiberglass.
What the two substrates are
Lauan is a thin tropical plywood, historically the standard substrate in RV sidewall construction and still used on plenty of units. It is cheap, light, takes adhesive well and is dimensionally stable when dry.
Composite substrate, most commonly Azdel, is a polypropylene based board. It costs more, weighs about the same, takes adhesive well, and it does not absorb water.
That last property is the whole story.
What happens when water reaches each one
Lauan. Water is absorbed. The plywood swells, its internal plies begin to separate, and given time and warmth it rots. Structural integrity goes with it. A rotted lauan substrate cannot hold a fastener, cannot support a bond and cannot carry any load, so it has to be removed and replaced.
The timeline is faster than people expect. Two seasons of a steady leak in Southern California heat is enough to destroy a substantial area.
Composite. Water is not absorbed. It sits at the bond line and it kills adhesive, so the skin debonds. But the board itself stays dimensionally sound, holds fasteners and supports a bond once it is dried and cleaned.
That means a composite wall with the same leak history frequently only needs cleaning, drying and rebonding rather than substrate replacement.
The counterintuitive part
Composite is better and it is also sneakier.
Lauan rot announces itself. The wall goes soft in a way you cannot ignore, the interior panel stains, and something smells. You find out.
Composite does not. The board stays firm, the interior looks fine, and the only symptom is a wall that flexes slightly and taps hollow. Owners live with that for years without realising anything is wrong, and meanwhile the debonded area grows every time the wall flexes.
So composite gives you a cheaper repair and a longer window to not notice you need one.
How do you tell which you have?
Approximately, by year and manufacturer. Composite substrate became common in the mid 2010s and is now widespread, but adoption varies by brand and by product line within a brand. Some manufacturers used it on premium lines years before their entry lines.
Definitively, by looking. Any existing access point gets you there: remove a vent, an exterior light, or a service hatch and look at the cut edge of the wall. Lauan looks like thin plywood, with visible plies. Composite looks like a uniform, slightly fibrous board, usually light coloured and clearly not wood.
If you cannot get access, a small area opened during assessment answers it. On any wall repair we establish substrate type before scoping, because scoping it wrong changes the number by five figures.
What the two repairs actually cost
- Composite, dry, debonded only. Clean, dry, rebond under pressure. Falls in the lower half of delamination repair at $1,500 to $20,000 and up, typically well below the midpoint on a contained area.
- Composite, wet. Same, plus drying time. Bonding to a wet substrate guarantees the repair fails, so this genuinely takes longer even though the labor is similar.
- Lauan, dry, debonded only. Same as composite. Uncommon, because dry lauan debonding usually means heat rather than water.
- Lauan, wet or rotted. Substrate removal and replacement, which means the skin comes off across the affected area, the framing gets inspected and frequently repaired, new substrate goes in and the whole assembly is rebonded. Upper half of the range, and it approaches full panel replacement at $2,500 to $25,000 and up.
All at $210 per hour body and paint, plus $55 per paint hour materials.
Does this change how you should maintain the coach?
Not really, which is the useful conclusion. Both substrates depend on the same thing: keeping water out.
Roof recoat and reseal runs $750 to $4,500 at 4 to 20 labor hours. Inspect every six months and reseal penetrations as they show shrinkage or cracking. On a lauan coach that discipline prevents a substrate replacement. On a composite coach it prevents a debond you would not have noticed for four years.
The difference substrate makes is to what happens after you fail to do that. It is not a reason to relax if you have composite, it is a reason to be slightly less alarmed when you find something.
