A Reefer Skin Puncture Is a Thermal Problem, Not a Cosmetic One
A refrigerated body is an insulated sandwich panel. A skin puncture admits moisture into the closed cell foam core, where it migrates well beyond the entry point and destroys insulation permanently. Sealing the skin traps the moisture inside, so the wet core section has to be removed.
This is the most misunderstood repair in commercial vehicle work, and the misunderstanding is expensive.
A small puncture in a reefer skin looks cosmetic. A driver clips something at a dock, there is a two inch hole in the aluminum, and the sensible looking response is to seal it and carry on.
That response destroys the panel.
What a reefer panel actually is
A sandwich. Outer skin, closed cell foam core, inner liner. The skin and liner are barriers. The foam is the insulation and it is the whole point of the body.
Closed cell foam works because the cells are sealed. Air trapped in sealed cells conducts heat very poorly, which is what makes the panel insulate. Once water is in those cells, it conducts, because water conducts heat roughly twenty five times better than air does.
So a wet section of core is not insulating. It is a thermal bridge running from outside the body to inside it.
Why moisture spreads so far
Because it migrates through the core along the path of least resistance, and because temperature cycling drives it.
The body runs cold inside and hot outside, especially here. That gradient drives moisture inward. Every cooling cycle pulls a little further. A two inch puncture can have a wet core area measured in square feet after a season, and none of it is visible from outside.
There is also a mechanical consequence. Wet foam loses compressive strength. The panel starts to flex where the core no longer supports it, flexing works the puncture larger, more water gets in, and the cycle accelerates. That loop does not stop on its own.
What it costs you before the repair
Three things, all of them running costs.
Fuel. The unit works harder in the affected area, continuously, and it never stops working harder because the core never dries.
Temperature uniformity. A thermal bridge creates a warm zone inside the load space. On a mixed load that is a product quality problem, and on a compliance sensitive load it is worse than a product quality problem.
Frost patterns. A recurring frost or condensation pattern in one interior area is the classic symptom of a wet core section, and it is the one drivers report before anyone connects it to the puncture six months earlier.
Why sealing it is the wrong answer
Because the moisture is already inside and a seal keeps it there.
Sealed over, the panel looks fixed. Under the seal, the wet core continues to conduct heat, continues to lose compressive strength, and continues to spread. And because the seal prevents the small amount of drying that would otherwise happen through the puncture, it arguably makes it worse.
The panel then fails around the repair, usually within a couple of years, and now the repair area is larger.
The correct repair
Remove the wet core, not just the damaged skin.
- Establish the extent of the wet core before quoting. This is the step that decides the price and it is not visible from outside.
- Cut out skin and wet core across the affected area.
- Install new core and skin with a proper vapour seal at the perimeter.
- Restore the inner liner so the load space stays cleanable.
- Reseal every penetration in the vicinity to prevent recurrence.
At our posted rates, reefer skin and liner repair runs $1,000 to $18,000 at 8 to 80 labor hours, body and paint at $210 per hour. The range is entirely about wet core extent, which is why an honest quote requires assessment rather than a photograph.
What we do not do
Refrigeration unit service. We repair the body, the insulated panel, the skin and the liner. The unit itself is specialist reefer technician work and we will say so rather than taking it on.
Same applies across our commercial work generally: body, paint, structural and equipment installation only. No engine work, no drivetrain work, no DOT inspections. On a unit needing both, you are coordinating two suppliers, and it is better to know that when you book than when you collect.
The practical fleet advice
Treat a reefer skin puncture as an urgent repair rather than a cosmetic one, and get it assessed while the wet area is still small.
A puncture repaired within a few weeks is a small job. The same puncture repaired after two seasons is a large one, and the difference between those two invoices is considerably larger than the difference in downtime.
