RV Microwave Repair and Replacement in Yorba Linda
Microwave work in a coach is usually replacement rather than repair, because the appliance costs less than the labor to diagnose and repair a magnetron circuit. The real work is fitting: cabinet cutout dimensions, trim kit, venting and whether the electrical supply can carry the load.
This is the one appliance where we will usually talk an owner out of a repair. The internal high voltage section of a microwave stores lethal charge in its capacitor even when unplugged, diagnosis is time consuming, and the parts plus labor comfortably exceed the price of a new unit.
What is genuinely worth paying for is the installation. RV microwave openings are built to the original appliance, frequently with a trim kit that hides a nonstandard gap, and a replacement that is a half inch too tall means cabinet modification rather than a swap.
Why is replacement almost always the right answer?
Because of where the cost sits. A microwave failure is usually the magnetron, the high voltage capacitor, the diode or the door interlock switches. Diagnosis requires discharging a capacitor that holds a dangerous charge after disconnection, then testing components that individually cost a meaningful fraction of a new appliance.
Add labor at the posted mechanical rate and the repair path crosses the price of a new unit quickly. The exception is a door interlock switch or a simple control panel fault on a high value convection microwave, where the appliance itself is expensive enough to justify the diagnosis.

What makes fitting a new microwave into an RV difficult?
The opening. RV cabinetry is built around the original appliance with tolerances measured in eighths of an inch, and microwave dimensions are not standardized across manufacturers. A replacement that is taller, deeper or wider than the original means modifying a cabinet that is structural in some builds and that carries a countertop or an overhead in others.
Trim kits are the second issue. Over the range RV microwaves are frequently fitted with a trim kit that fills the gap between the appliance body and the cabinet opening. When the replacement is a different size, the original trim kit will not fit and a matching one may not exist, at which point the correct answer is fabricating a filler panel that looks intentional rather than leaving a gap.
Venting is the third. Over the range units vent either through a duct to the outside or by recirculating through a charcoal filter. Getting that configuration wrong on a replacement leaves cooking moisture in the coach, which in a vehicle with a laminated interior is a genuine long term problem rather than an inconvenience.

Will the microwave run on the inverter?
Sometimes, and it is the most common electrical complaint tied to this appliance. A 1,000 watt microwave is rated by cooking output, not by draw. The actual input is commonly 1,400 to 1,700 watts, and the inverter has to supply that plus a startup surge.
At 12 volts, 1,500 watts of output means well over 125 amps flowing from the battery bank through the inverter cabling. If that cabling is undersized or a terminal is resistive, input voltage sags and the inverter shuts down on undervoltage. Owners read that as an inverter or microwave failure. It is a wiring fault.
Bank capacity is the other half. A pair of flooded lead acid batteries can supply that current only briefly and at a voltage that falls quickly. A lithium bank handles it comfortably. Before we move a microwave circuit onto an inverter subpanel we verify the bank, the cabling and the inverter surge rating, because doing it without checking produces a system that trips every time somebody reheats coffee.
