RV Appliance Repair in Yorba Linda

Household appliances have one power source. RV appliances routinely have three, and they use them in combination. An absorption refrigerator burns liquid propane for cooling but needs 12 volt DC for its control board. A furnace burns propane for heat but needs 12 volt DC to run the blower and 120 volt shore power for nothing at all. A rooftop air conditioner needs 120 volt AC to run and 12 volt DC to tell it to.
That interdependence is why appliance diagnosis in a coach is a systems job rather than a parts job. Before we condemn a control board we verify what is arriving at it, because a board that is being fed 10.8 volts by a tired battery bank will misbehave in ways that look exactly like failure.
What is the difference between absorption and compressor refrigeration?
An absorption refrigerator has no compressor and no moving parts in the cooling circuit. It uses heat, from a propane flame or an electric element, to boil a mixture of ammonia, water and hydrogen through a sealed circuit. The ammonia evaporates, absorbs heat from the cabinet, then condenses and returns. It is elegant, silent and it works away from shore power on a tank of propane.
A compressor refrigerator is a conventional vapour compression unit, the same principle as a household refrigerator, driven by an electric motor. On RVs these are either 12 volt DC compressor units, which are now common on van conversions and newer coaches, or residential units running from an inverter.
The practical difference is enormous. Absorption units cool slowly, are sensitive to ambient temperature, are inefficient in Southern California summer heat, and must be reasonably level to operate. Compressor units cool faster, do not care about level, work in high ambient temperatures, and need substantial electrical capacity to run when unplugged. Neither is universally better, but they fail in completely different ways and are diagnosed differently.

Why does the power supply cause so many appliance faults?
Because low voltage does not stop a circuit board, it confuses it. Control boards on RV appliances are designed around a nominal 12 volt supply and most tolerate a range down to around 10.5 volts. Below that, and sometimes above that under a heavy voltage drop, boards reset, lock out, or fail to complete an ignition sequence.
A furnace that lights and drops out after twenty seconds is the classic example. It sounds like a sail switch or a flame sensor fault, and it frequently is a battery bank sagging under the blower load until the board browns out. Replacing the board fixes nothing and costs several hundred dollars.
The same applies to propane pressure. A regulator delivering below the required eleven inches of water column will let a furnace light and then fail to hold flame, will make a cooktop burn with a lazy yellow flame, and will make an absorption refrigerator cool poorly. One regulator fault presents as three separate appliance failures, and owners understandably report it that way.
When is an appliance worth repairing?
Our working rule on absorption refrigerators is fifteen years. Beyond that, a cooling unit failure is a replacement decision rather than a repair decision, because the sealed circuit has a finite life, replacing a cooling unit on an old cabinet costs a substantial share of a new unit, and the rest of the assembly is the same age.
On air conditioning the rule is different. Rooftop units have sealed refrigerant systems that are not field serviceable in any practical sense, so a genuine sealed system failure means replacement. But the majority of air conditioning complaints are capacitors, fan motors and control boards, all of which are worth repairing on a unit of any age.
On cooking appliances almost everything is repairable, since burners, valves, thermocouples and igniters are all serviceable parts. On microwaves the economics reverse: the unit is usually cheaper to replace than to repair, and cooktop, range and microwave replacement is published at $350 to $2,500 across 1 to 10 labor hours.
