A recreational vehicle harness lives a harder life than any residential wiring. It passes through metal framing, crosses a slide that moves, runs beside a heat source, sits in a bay that gets wet and vibrates continuously for the life of the vehicle. Every one of those is a failure mechanism.

The other half of the problem is history. Coaches accumulate additions. A television, a backup camera, a lighting upgrade, a stereo, an inverter, each spliced in by a different person with different standards. By year fifteen many coaches carry a shadow electrical system that appears on no diagram.

Where do RV wiring harnesses actually fail?

At transitions, almost every time. Where the harness passes through a framing member without a grommet, the edge saws through insulation over years of vibration. Where a harness crosses into a slide room, the flex cycle work hardens conductors until strands break inside intact insulation, which produces a circuit that reads continuous with a meter and fails under current.

Heat is the second location. Runs beside a water heater, a furnace duct or an engine compartment lose their insulation flexibility, crack and eventually short. Damp is the third: bays that take road spray corrode conductors from the cut end inward, wicking up under the insulation where it is invisible.

Rodents are the fourth and in storage they are the worst. Chewed insulation inside a wall cavity produces intermittent faults, shorts to structure and phantom draws. Repair means removing the damaged section entirely and splicing in new conductor with sealed connections, then closing the entry point that let them in.

Why does the fuse rating matter so much?

A fuse exists to protect the conductor, not the device on the end of it. That single fact resolves most of the arguments we have with owners about fuse sizing.

A 14 gauge conductor in an RV wall has a safe current limit. The fuse is chosen to open before the conductor reaches a temperature that damages insulation. If a fuse keeps opening, the correct question is what is drawing more current than the circuit was designed for, not what larger fuse will make the annoyance stop. Fitting a larger fuse removes the protection and relocates the failure to a section of wire behind a wall panel where nobody will see it glow.

The same principle governs added circuits. Tapping an accessory onto an existing fused feed means two devices now share protection sized for one. We remove those taps and rebuild the circuit from an appropriately rated distribution point with its own fuse, which is usually a small job that removes a genuine fire risk.

When does a panel get repaired and when does it get replaced?

Repair when the damage is localized. A single heat damaged fuse position, a loose terminal screw or a corroded ground bus can be addressed without disturbing the rest of the panel, and that is the cheaper and better answer when the panel is otherwise sound.

Replacement when the housing is heat deformed, when the panel is a discontinued design with no available parts, or when the circuit count has outgrown it. Coaches that have accumulated additions often have a panel running at capacity with three circuits doubled up on single positions. Adding a properly rated distribution point or replacing the panel is the honest fix.

On combined converter and distribution panels the decision changes, because a failed converter section sometimes makes replacing the whole assembly cheaper than sourcing the converter module alone. We price both paths and let you choose rather than defaulting to the larger job.

How much does RV wiring repair cost?

It bills at the posted $260 per hour electrical rate with diagnostics at $285 per hour. Single circuit repairs commonly land at two to four hours. Full harness sections and panel rebuilds run considerably higher and are quoted before work starts.

Can a damaged harness be repaired or does the whole thing need replacing?

Sectional repair is the normal answer. We remove the damaged length and splice in new conductor with sealed crimps. Full harness replacement is reserved for fire damage or extensive rodent destruction across multiple runs.

Are tape and wire nut splices really a problem in an RV?

Yes. Vibration loosens wire nuts and tape unwinds with heat. Both create high resistance connections that heat under load. Every one we find gets rebuilt as a sealed crimp.

Do you rewire trailers and cargo bodies as well as motorhomes?

Yes. Cargo trailer, toy hauler and commercial body wiring is routine work here, including 12 volt and shore power circuits, lighting and connector repair.

Will you give me a diagram of what you found?

We supply circuit reference notes with the invoice covering what we mapped and what we changed. On coaches with heavy aftermarket history that document is often more useful than the repair itself.
