Waste tanks are the least glamorous system on a coach and the one owners understand least. They are also where a small maintenance habit prevents a five figure repair, because a tank that has been managed badly for years does not simply smell, it clogs, cracks and eventually leaks into a floor cavity.

The mechanical work is straightforward. The cost comes from where the tanks live: strapped under the floor, inside an insulated belly pan, with frame members, slide mechanisms, axles and sometimes the exhaust between the technician and the part.

Why do black tank level sensors always read wrong?

Because they are almost never broken. The standard RV level sensor is a small metal probe penetrating the tank wall at a set height, and it reads level by measuring conductivity between probes. Anything conductive bridging that probe reads as liquid, and the inside of a black tank is full of things that stick.

Toilet paper, solids and mineral scale build a film on the tank wall and drape across the probes. Once bridged, the sensor reads full whether the tank contains anything or not. Replacing the sensor with an identical probe into the same fouled tank produces the same reading within weeks, which is why we tell owners the truth rather than selling the part.

The fix is cleaning the tank interior, and the prevention is method: keep enough water in the black tank so solids stay suspended, avoid letting the tank sit nearly empty with the valve open at a full hookup, and flush thoroughly rather than briefly. Where sensors are genuinely required to work, external capacitive sensor strips that read through the tank wall avoid the fouling problem entirely and are a worthwhile upgrade during any tank job.

What causes a pyramid clog and how is it cleared?

The classic black tank blockage forms directly under the toilet. Solids and paper accumulate into a cone that grows upward toward the flange. It happens when the tank is dumped too often with too little water, or when the valve is left open at a full hookup so liquid drains continuously and solids are left behind with nothing to carry them.

The signs are a toilet that drains slowly, a tank that reads full and will not empty, or a dump that produces only liquid. At that point adding chemicals accomplishes very little, because the blockage is above the outlet and the chemical drains straight past it.

Clearing it means filling the tank with water to soften and float the mass, then flushing under pressure through a tank rinse fitting or through the toilet. Severe cases need mechanical clearing through the flange, and the worst cases need the tank dropped. Prevention is straightforward: keep the valve closed until the tank is at least two thirds full, and use plenty of water on every flush.

When can a tank be repaired and when does it need replacing?

It depends on the material. Polyethylene tanks, which are the most common, are difficult to bond reliably because almost nothing sticks to polyethylene long term. A properly executed plastic weld using matched polyethylene rod can work on a clean crack in an accessible area. Epoxy and adhesive patches on polyethylene are temporary and we do not present them as anything else.

ABS tanks bond well with ABS cement and a reinforcing patch, and repairs on ABS are genuinely durable. Fiberglass tanks on some higher end coaches are repairable with resin and cloth much like any fiberglass structure, which is work this shop does daily on bodies anyway.

Replacement wins when the crack runs through a fitting boss, when the tank has multiple failures, or when access is already open. That last point matters economically: if the belly pan is down and the tank is out, the incremental cost of installing a new tank instead of welding an old one is small compared with doing the access work twice.

What does a vent stack do and why does a blocked one matter?

Every waste tank has a vent running to the roof. It lets air in as liquid leaves and lets gas out as the tank fills. Without it a tank cannot drain properly and pressure differences push odour back through the fixtures.

Blockages come from wasp and mud dauber nests at the roof termination, from crushed or kinked pipe inside a wall, and from vent caps that have been over sealed during roof work. The symptom owners report is odour inside the coach, and the second symptom is slow draining.

This is worth checking before anyone buys a chemical deodorizer. Persistent odour in a coach with correctly managed tanks is usually a vent problem or a dried toilet seal, and both are inexpensive to correct compared with the products sold to mask them.

Common Problems and How We Solve Them
