Dump Body Floor Wear and the Plate You Should Have Used
Dump bodies fail from abrasion and cyclic structural load rather than impact. Floor plate thins fastest in the rear third where material velocity is highest, and hoist mountings crack from cyclic loading. Abrasion resistant plate costs more and lasts substantially longer.
Almost nothing we repair on a dump truck is damage. It is wear and fatigue, which means it is predictable, which means it is plannable.
That is genuinely useful for a fleet, because predictable work is cheap and surprise work is not.
Where the floor goes
The rear third, first, every time.
A dump body floor wears from material sliding across it under load. Material velocity is highest near the tailgate as the body tips and the load accelerates out, so that is where abrasion is most aggressive. The plate thins from the top surface down until it perforates.
You can predict it. Measure plate thickness at three points along the floor annually and you will see the rear third dropping faster than the rest. That measurement takes ten minutes and it tells you whether you have one more season or three.
Side walls wear at the material contact line, which sits at a consistent height depending on what you haul. Corrosion follows wherever abrasion has taken the coating off, and the two accelerate each other.
Why hoist mounts crack
Because the mounting carries the entire body and load weight through a small number of attachment points, in a cyclic loading pattern.
Every dump cycle is a load cycle at those mounts, at close to maximum stress. A truck doing eight loads a day does roughly two thousand cycles a year at high stress. That is a fatigue case, and fatigue produces cracks rather than wear.
Plating over a cracked hoist mount is the standard field repair and it does not work, for the same reason it does not work anywhere else: the plate relocates the stress concentration to its own edge and the crack reappears there.
Correct repair removes the cracked section, splices in new material with full penetration welds, and reinforces for the load the body actually carries.
The tailgate
Hinges and latches, from load and from repeated slamming. Not complicated, but worth including in any body job because access is already open and the hinge points are where the rear frame takes load.
A tailgate that will not seal cleanly is usually the rear frame moving rather than the hinge wearing, same pattern as everywhere else in commercial body work.
The abrasion resistant plate conversation
Here is the arithmetic we put in front of fleet customers, because it is a real decision and it deserves numbers rather than a recommendation.
Floor repair and replacement runs $500 to $9,500 at 4 to 40 labor hours at our posted $210 per hour rate. Where you land in that range depends on area and on plate specification.
Standard plate is cheaper per square foot. Abrasion resistant plate costs meaningfully more and lasts substantially longer in this application, frequently two to three times.
So the question is how long you are keeping the body. On a body you intend to run for another eight years, abrasion resistant plate is straightforwardly cheaper over that period. On a body you are cycling out in two, it is not.
We give both figures. What we will not do is quietly reinstate standard plate on a body that just wore through standard plate in four years and call it a repair, because that is selling the same job twice.
What is in scope and what is not
We do the body, the floor, the sides, the mounting structure, the tailgate and the coating.
We do not service the hydraulic hoist system, the cylinders or the pump. That is specialist hydraulic work. And on commercial vehicles generally: body, paint, structural and equipment installation only. No engine work, no drivetrain work, no DOT inspections.
Being clear about that up front saves a wasted trip.
The annual programme that costs less
On any dump fleet the same three checks catch nearly everything:
- Floor plate thickness at three points, front, middle and rear third
- Visual inspection of every hoist mount and cab guard mount for cracking, with paint cracking treated as a positive finding
- Coating condition anywhere abrasion has been working
Ten minutes per vehicle. What it buys you is section replacement scheduled in your slow season rather than a perforated floor discovered mid contract, and a hoist mount reinforced at $2,000 rather than a frame repaired at $12,000.
