Lift Gate Failures Are Mounting Failures Nine Times Out of Ten
A lift gate carries several hundred pounds cantilevered behind the rear axle, cycled dozens of times daily. That is close to a textbook fatigue loading case, and the mounting into the chassis fails well before the gate mechanism does. Repair means reinforcing beyond original specification.
A lift gate is a cantilever. It carries load out behind the rear axle, on a moment arm, and it does it dozens of times a day for years.
If you sketched a worst case fatigue loading scenario for a bolted or welded mounting, you would draw something close to a lift gate.
What actually fails
The mounting, and the chassis structure it attaches to.
Cracks appear at the mounting plate edges, at weld toes, and at the frame rail where the mounting concentrates load into it. On a high cycle vehicle, cracking at these points is expected rather than exceptional, and finding it early is the difference between a manageable repair and a frame job.
The mechanism itself, the hydraulics and the platform, generally outlast the mounting. Which is why a gate that has become sloppy, or that has started to sit at an angle, is usually reporting a mounting problem rather than a hydraulic one.
Symptoms, in the order they appear
- The gate sits slightly lower or at a slight angle when stowed
- A creak or a bang on the first lift of the day that was not there before
- Visible paint cracking around the mounting plate, which is the coating failing over a substrate that is moving
- A visible crack at a weld toe or plate edge
- The gate no longer aligning with the deck edge
By stage three there is movement. By stage four it is a repair. Between those two stages there is usually several months, and a fleet doing quarterly walkarounds catches it at three rather than five.
Why plating over it does not work
This is the most common field repair and it is close to useless.
A plate welded over a fatigue crack does not remove the stress concentration, it relocates it to the edge of the plate. The plate is stiffer than the surrounding metal, so load transfers into and out of it abruptly, and the new crack forms at the plate edge. Usually within a year.
That is not a workmanship problem, it is how fatigue works. Correct repair removes the cracked section entirely, splices in new material with full penetration welds, and adds reinforcement sized for the load the vehicle actually carries.
That last part matters. If a mounting cracked once at its original specification, the original specification was inadequate for how the vehicle is being used. Reinstating it resets the clock rather than fixing the problem.
The numbers
- Lift gate installation and repair: $1,500 to $8,500 at 8 to 35 labor hours
- Commercial truck frame straightening and structural repair: $750 to $20,000 and up at 5 to 80 hours
- Welding and metal fabrication generally: $500 to $12,000 at 4 to 60 hours

The gap between an $8,500 mounting reinforcement and a $20,000 frame repair is entirely about how long the crack was left. That is the single most useful sentence in this article for a fleet manager.
What we look at during a lift gate job
Because access is already open, and because these things are related.
- Frame rail condition around and behind the mounting
- Crossmember and outrigger condition at the rear
- Rear corner post and frame square, which affects door sealing
- Deck edge condition where the gate lands
- Wiring and control routing, which chafes on a moving assembly
- Existing repairs, particularly plated ones
Finding a plated repair from a previous shop is common and it changes the scope, because that plate has to come off and the original crack has to be dealt with properly.
Installation is where you prevent the next one
If you are having a gate installed rather than repaired, that is the moment to get the mounting right.
Specify for the load the vehicle actually carries, not the minimum that satisfies the gate manufacturer. Spread load into the frame across multiple points rather than concentrating it. Address the coating at every fastener penetration, because those are corrosion starts and corrosion accelerates fatigue.
Service and utility body installation runs $2,500 to $15,000 and toolbox and crane body installation $1,500 to $10,000. Doing the mounting properly at install is a small fraction of those figures and it is the cheapest structural work you will ever buy.
