What can a bumper or receiver actually be mounted to?

The frame, and only the frame, on anything that will take a tow load or a hitch mounted carrier. Bumper mounted receivers on recreational vehicles are the single most misunderstood item in this category, because many factory RV rear bumpers are square tube that carries the bumper skin and nothing else. Hanging a bike rack with four bikes off one produces a bent bumper and sometimes a torn rear cap.

A frame mounted receiver runs forward and ties into the frame rails, distributing the load into the vehicle structure. That is significantly more fabrication than bolting to a bumper, and it is the only correct answer where any real load will be carried.

The rating conversation follows from that. A receiver has a stated tongue weight and gross trailer weight capacity, and on an RV the limiting factor is frequently the vehicle rear overhang rather than the receiver. A long overhang multiplies the leverage on the frame, so a receiver rated for 500 pounds of tongue weight on a truck may be limited to considerably less at the back of a coach.

How does a roof rack get mounted without causing a leak?

By fastening to structure and by treating every penetration as a permanent waterproofing detail rather than an afterthought. This shop repairs roof and delamination damage constantly, so we see the outcome of rack installations done carelessly.

The method is to locate the roof structure, whether that is the van roof ribs or the coach roof trusses, mount to it with a backing plate inside where access allows, bed the fastener in a sealant compatible with the roof material, and finish the penetration so water sheds away from it. On EPDM and TPO coach roofs the sealant chemistry matters, since incompatible products do not bond and lift within a season.

On vans there is a further option worth mentioning: many modern cargo vans have factory rack mounting provisions in the roof structure with threaded inserts and no penetration required. Where those exist, using them is always better than drilling.

Do headache racks and cab guards need special consideration?

Yes, because they exist to stop cargo entering the cab, which means they must be attached to something that will hold under load. Bolting to the bed floor sheet metal accomplishes nothing in an actual event.

Correct mounting is to the bed rails at reinforced points or through to the frame. On service bodies and utility bodies the manufacturer usually provides mounting provisions, and where they do not, we add structure.
