Unibody straightening restores a monocoque structure where the body panels carry structural load, which covers most modern cargo and camper vans. Correction requires anchored measured pulling and, on ADAS equipped vans, mandatory sensor recalibration afterward.
A Sprinter has no separate frame. The floor pan, the sills, the pillars and the roof rails together are the structure, and an impact into any one of them redistributes load through the rest.
That makes unibody correction less forgiving than frame work. There is no rail to pull against independently of the body, so measurement points are more numerous, tolerances are tighter, and the sequence of correction matters more.
What makes unibody repair different from frame repair?
On a body on frame vehicle, the frame is the datum and the body sits on it. On a unibody, the body is the datum, which means the reference points you are measuring to are themselves part of what may have moved.
Correction sequence therefore matters enormously. The structure is brought back in a specific order, generally working outward from the least damaged reference points, because correcting a secondary deformation before the primary one locks the error in.
How does a camper van conversion complicate this?
Significantly, and it is the single most under appreciated issue in van collision repair.
A conversion adds substantial mass and it fastens to the structure. Cabinetry bonded or bolted to the sidewalls, a bed platform tied into the floor, a roof rack through bolted to the roof rails, a lithium bank and water tank adding hundreds of pounds low down. All of it changes how the structure responds to both the impact and the correction.
Practically, the conversion frequently has to come out before the structure can be pulled, and that removal and reinstallation is real labor that belongs on the estimate. Documenting the conversion before it is disturbed is the difference between it being paid for and not.
Why is ADAS recalibration mandatory after unibody work?
Because the sensors are mounted to the structure you just moved.
Modern Sprinters carry radar behind the front fascia, cameras in the windshield mount, blind spot sensors in the rear quarters, and ultrasonic sensors around the perimeter. Every one of those is aimed relative to the vehicle centreline. Straighten the structure and those aim points change, and a radar that is a fraction of a degree off is worse than useless because it reports confidently and wrongly.
