RV Furnace and Heating System Repair in Yorba Linda

The RV furnace is the appliance most likely to be blamed for something that is not its fault. It draws a surprising amount of 12 volt current to run its blower, typically six to ten amps continuously, which on a cold night with no shore power will flatten a tired battery bank in hours.

The result is a furnace that works in the evening and refuses to light at three in the morning. Nothing is wrong with the furnace. The board browned out when the bank sagged under the blower load, and it locked out doing exactly what it was designed to do.

What is a sail switch and why does it stop the furnace?

The sail switch is a safety interlock that proves the blower is actually moving air before the gas valve is allowed to open. It is a light vane in the airstream connected to a switch. Blower spins, air moves, vane deflects, switch closes, ignition sequence proceeds.

When it does not close, the furnace runs the blower and never lights. That is the single most common no heat symptom on an RV furnace and it has four causes: the blower is not turning fast enough because 12 volt supply voltage is low, the blower wheel is fouled or the motor bearings are dragging, the ducting or return air path is blocked, or the switch itself is dirty or misadjusted.

Notice that three of those four are not the switch. That is why replacing a sail switch on a furnace with a sagging battery bank fixes nothing, and why we measure supply voltage at the furnace board while the blower is running before touching any component.

Why does the furnace light and then shut down after a minute?

That pattern is normally the limit switch, which is a thermal cutout mounted in the heat exchanger area. If the exchanger gets hotter than design, the switch opens, the gas valve closes and the blower continues to cool the unit. It is a safety device and it is doing its job.

What makes the exchanger overheat is restricted airflow. Closed or blocked floor registers, a crushed duct hose behind a cabinet, a blocked return air grille, or ducting that was modified during an interior remodel without regard for the furnace. RV furnace ducting is sized tightly and it does not tolerate having half its outlets closed, which owners do naturally when trying to direct heat to one room.

The second cause is a partly blocked combustion air or exhaust path at the exterior vent. Those coaxial vents are attractive to insects and small birds, and an obstruction changes the combustion airflow enough to overheat the exchanger. Both problems are inexpensive to correct and both are far more common than a genuinely failed limit switch.

How is a hydronic heating system different?

AquaHot and similar hydronic systems replace the forced air furnace with a glycol loop heated by a diesel burner and an electric element. Heat is distributed to zones through small exchangers with fans, and the same loop supplies domestic hot water.

The advantages are real: quiet, even heat, multiple zones, unlimited hot water and no propane consumption for heating. The maintenance obligations are also real. Burner nozzle and electrode service, glycol condition and level, circulation pump condition and zone valve function all need periodic attention, and a neglected system fails expensively.

Diagnosis is different too. A cold zone on a hydronic system might be the burner, the circulation pump, a zone valve, an air lock in the loop or the zone fan, and those are five very different repairs. Published service on AquaHot and hydronic systems runs $750 to $8,500 across 3 to 35 labor hours, which reflects that spread.

Common Problems and How We Solve Them

The furnace works in the evening but not overnight.

SolutionThe battery bank is sagging under the blower load until the board browns out. That is a charging and battery capacity problem presenting as a heating fault, and replacing furnace parts will not touch it.

The blower runs but the furnace never lights.

SolutionSail switch circuit. We check blower speed, supply voltage, ducting and return air before condemning the switch, because three of the four usual causes are not the switch itself.

Is a diesel or hydronic heater worth fitting instead?

On larger coaches and van conversions it can be, because it gives quiet even heat and does not consume propane. The trade is higher installation cost and a real maintenance schedule that must be kept.
