The refrigerator generates more service calls than any other appliance in a coach, and the reason is that absorption refrigeration is a genuinely fragile technology being asked to work in conditions it was not designed for.

It is a sealed circuit with no pump, relying on gravity and heat to circulate ammonia solution. It works beautifully when level, adequately vented and operating below about 90 degrees ambient. Park it on a slope in Palm Springs in July and it does none of those things.

Why does running an absorption refrigerator out of level damage it?

Because circulation in an absorption unit depends on gravity. The ammonia and water solution moves through the boiler, the absorber and the condenser by density and head, with no pump anywhere in the circuit. Tilt the unit and the liquid pools where it should be flowing.

When solution stops circulating, the boiler continues to be heated with nothing carrying the heat away. Sodium chromate corrosion inhibitor in the solution then bakes onto the boiler tube wall as a solid deposit, which permanently restricts the passage. That restriction is not reversible and no service procedure removes it. The cooling unit is damaged from that point forward.

The tolerance is usually stated as around three degrees off level, which is about half a bubble. Modern units are more tolerant while travelling because motion keeps the solution moving, but a coach parked overnight on a slope with the refrigerator running is the classic damage scenario. Owners often connect the failure to the trip afterward rather than to the night on the slope.

The other damage mechanism is heat. A blocked or unventilated fridge compartment traps heat behind the unit, the condenser cannot reject it, and cooling performance falls off badly. In Southern California summer that alone will make a healthy absorption unit look broken.

How do you tell a cooling unit failure from a control board failure?

By what heat is being applied and what the unit does with it. If the boiler is getting heat, from either the propane flame or the electric element, and the cooling unit produces no cold after a proper interval, the sealed circuit has failed. If no heat is being applied, the fault is upstream: the board, the element, the gas valve, the igniter or the supply.

The physical evidence is usually definitive. A failed cooling unit frequently shows a yellow or greenish residue where sodium chromate has leaked at a weld, sometimes with a distinct ammonia smell in the compartment. A gurgling that has stopped, a boiler tube that is hot with nothing happening, or an audible ammonia sound with no cooling all point the same way.

Control board faults present differently. The unit fails to attempt ignition, locks out with a fault code, switches modes incorrectly, or runs one mode and not the other. Testing supply voltage at the board is the first step, because a board fed a sagging 12 volt supply produces symptoms indistinguishable from a failed board.

Why is a 15 year old absorption unit a replacement rather than a repair?

Because the cooling unit is the expensive part of the appliance, and a cooling unit replacement on an old cabinet leaves you with a new circuit inside a fifteen year old assembly whose door seals, hinges, interior fittings, control board, igniter and gas valve are all the same age.

The economics rarely work. A replacement cooling unit installed lands close enough to the cost of a new appliance that the new appliance is the better spend, and the new appliance comes with a complete unit rather than one refreshed component.

That is also the natural point to consider changing technology. Many owners replacing a failed absorption unit go to a 12 volt compressor unit instead, gaining insensitivity to level, much better performance in heat and faster cooling, at the cost of needing more battery capacity. On a coach with lithium and solar already fitted, that trade is usually easy. On a coach with two flooded batteries, it is a bigger conversation and it needs to happen before the appliance is ordered.
