RV Generator Maintenance in Yorba Linda

Generator maintenance is the cheapest work we do and it prevents the most expensive work we do. A service is a few hundred dollars. A carburetor rebuild plus a valve job because the set sat for three years is several thousand.
The complicating factor is that owners track calendar time and generators track hours. A coach that spent a season in a hot campground running air conditioning nightly may have put four hundred hours on a set in three months, which is more than many coaches accumulate in five years.
What is on a generator service interval?
Oil and oil filter lead the list, and generator oil works harder than engine oil because these sets run at constant speed under sustained load with limited cooling airflow. Typical intervals are around 150 hours on gasoline sets and 150 to 250 on diesel sets, with an annual minimum regardless of hours because oil degrades sitting as well as running.
Air filter and fuel filter follow. Generator compartments accumulate road dust and, on coaches parked under trees, organic debris. A restricted air filter richens the mixture and accelerates carbon deposit. Spark plugs on gasoline sets are typically replaced around 500 hours and they read like a diagnostic instrument: colour and deposit on a plug tells you whether the set is running rich, lean or burning oil.
The alternator end needs attention too. Brushes and slip rings wear and are inspected on schedule. On diesel sets, valve lash adjustment appears in the maintenance schedule and is genuinely important, since a tight valve on a constant speed engine will burn a seat.

What does a loaded exercise run actually accomplish?
It brings the whole set up to real operating temperature, burns off accumulated moisture in the oil and the exhaust, keeps fuel moving through the carburetor or injectors, and puts current through the alternator windings so they stay dry.
The load part is what most owners skip and it is the part that matters. Idling a generator with nothing connected keeps the fuel fresh and does very little else. Combustion at very low load is incomplete, which is exactly the condition that deposits carbon in the first place. Two air conditioners for two hours a month achieves the goal on most coaches.
For a set that has already been under-loaded for years, an exercise routine will not reverse existing carbon. That requires a load bank test to identify how far output has degraded and then mechanical work to clean up the combustion chamber and valves. Starting the routine after the repair is what keeps it from happening again.
How does storage change the maintenance plan?
A coach that will sit for months needs the fuel treated. Ethanol blended gasoline begins forming gum in as little as thirty days and reliably within ninety. A stabilizer added and then run through the generator long enough to reach the carburetor is the difference between starting in spring and rebuilding in spring.
The compartment matters too. Generator bays are attractive to rodents: enclosed, sheltered and warm after a run. Removing debris, closing gaps and checking the bay periodically prevents chewed harnesses that turn a stored generator into a wiring job.
Batteries matter as well, since a generator that cranks slowly on a weak house or chassis battery will wear a starter and can foul plugs with unburned fuel from repeated failed starts. Storage maintenance on the generator and on the battery bank are the same project.
