RV Generator Installation in Yorba Linda

Generator installation covers replacing an existing set or fitting one where none existed. The work spans compartment preparation, fuel supply, exhaust routing, vibration isolation, transfer switch integration and electrical capacity verification. It is performed in shop in Yorba Linda and never as a partial installation.

Fitting a generator looks like a mechanical job and it is really four jobs that have to agree with each other. The set has to be fed fuel, its exhaust has to leave the vehicle safely, it has to be mounted so vibration does not destroy the coach or the set, and its output has to reach a transfer switch and a panel that can accept it.

Get three of those right and the fourth will still make the installation unacceptable. Exhaust is the one that matters most, because a badly routed generator exhaust is not an inconvenience, it is the mechanism behind carbon monoxide fatalities in recreational vehicles.

Why is exhaust routing the most important part of the install?

Because generator exhaust contains carbon monoxide, it is odourless, and a coach is a sealed box that people sleep in. The routing has to discharge clear of the vehicle body, away from windows, doors, vents and the air conditioning intake, and it has to stay clear when the coach is parked in a crosswind or with a slide extended.

The station wagon effect is the specific hazard: at low speed or with the vehicle stationary and a following wind, exhaust can be drawn back along the body and into an open window or roof vent. Discharge point selection accounts for that, which is why we do not simply route the exhaust to the nearest convenient edge.

Every joint in the exhaust path is a potential leak into a compartment that connects to living space. On installations we pressure or smoke test the exhaust path, verify that compartment penetrations are sealed, and confirm the coach carbon monoxide detector is present, powered and within its service life. That last item is not optional and we will not release a vehicle without it.

What determines whether a generator will fit at all?

Four constraints, checked in this order. Physical envelope, meaning compartment dimensions plus the clearance the manufacturer requires for cooling airflow, which is frequently larger than owners assume. Weight, because a diesel set is heavy and its position relative to the axle changes loading. Fuel supply, meaning whether the vehicle tank has a generator pickup and whether the fuel type matches. Electrical capacity, meaning whether the transfer switch, cabling and panel can accept the set output.

On motorhomes with a factory generator bay, replacement within the same family is usually straightforward. Moving up in output frequently is not, because the larger set needs more airflow, more fuel and heavier output cabling, and the existing transfer switch may be rated below the new output.

On trailers and toy haulers with no factory provision, the installation includes fabricating a compartment, which brings structural mounting, ventilation and weight distribution into scope. That is genuine fabrication work and it is quoted as such rather than as a bolt in.

How is the generator integrated into the coach electrical system?

Through the automatic transfer switch. Generator output lands on the switch, which is responsible for making sure shore power and generator can never be connected simultaneously. On a new installation the switch has to be rated for the generator output, and on an upgraded installation the existing switch is frequently the limiting component.

The remote start circuit runs from a dash or bay panel to the generator controller, and it carries the start, stop and hour meter functions. On installations into vehicles with no factory provision, that panel and its wiring are part of the job.

Fuel is the other integration point. Gasoline and diesel sets typically draw from the vehicle tank through a dedicated pickup tube that stops short of the bottom, so the generator runs dry before the vehicle does. Where no such pickup exists, one is added or a dedicated tank is fitted. Liquid propane sets connect to the coach LP system and require certified technician work along with regulator capacity verification, since an LP generator plus a furnace plus a water heater can exceed regulator output.

Common Problems and How We Solve Them

A larger generator was fitted and the transfer switch now overheats.

SolutionThe switch was never rated for the new output. We verify transfer switch and cable capacity against the set before installation, and replace the switch where the upgrade demands it.

Exhaust fumes enter the coach when parked with a tailwind.

SolutionThe discharge point is in the wrong place. We reroute to a position that stays clear in crosswind and slide extended parking, then test the path and seal all compartment penetrations.

A trailer has no generator provision at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a generator be added to a travel trailer or toy hauler?

Yes, and it involves fabricating a compartment with structural mounting and ventilation, plus fuel and exhaust provision. Toy haulers frequently have a factory provision already, which reduces the work substantially.

How big a generator do I need?

Add the running load of your largest simultaneous demands, then allow for air conditioning startup surge. Two rooftop units generally means a 5,500 watt class set. Oversizing has a cost too, since chronic under-loading causes carbon buildup.

Will a new generator run off my vehicle fuel tank?

Usually, through a dedicated pickup tube that stops above the engine pickup so the generator runs dry first. Where no pickup exists we add one or fit a dedicated tank as part of the installation.

Do you install liquid propane generators?

Yes, with certified technicians handling the LP connection. We also verify regulator capacity, because an LP generator running alongside a furnace and a water heater can exceed what the existing regulator delivers.

How long does a generator installation take?

A like for like replacement in an existing bay is generally two to four days. A new installation with compartment fabrication runs one to three weeks depending on the structural work involved.
