Deductible, Depreciation and Betterment Explained

Your deductible is the fixed amount you pay per claim. Betterment is a deduction applied when a repair leaves you better off than before the loss. Depreciation reduces payment for age and wear. Two of the three are frequently arguable, and almost nobody argues them.

Owners are routinely surprised that an approved estimate and a settlement cheque are different numbers. The gap is almost always one of these three, and only one of them is genuinely non negotiable.

Understanding which is which is worth real money, and it takes about five minutes.

What exactly is betterment and when is it legitimate?

Betterment is a deduction on the theory that replacing a worn part with a new one leaves you better off than you were before the loss, so you should contribute the difference.

It is legitimate on a genuinely consumable item with measurable remaining life. Tires at half tread, a roof membrane at fifteen years, brake components. It is not legitimate on a structural component, on a panel that was sound, or on anything where the original had no meaningful wear state. Betterment applied to a bonded sidewall panel is not a defensible position, and it comes up more often than it should.

How does depreciation actually work on a claim?

On an actual cash value policy, the carrier depreciates the payment for age and condition, pays the depreciated amount, and on many policies releases the held back portion once the repair is complete. That held back portion is recoverable depreciation, and it requires you to actually complete the repair and submit proof.

A surprising number of owners never claim it. They accept the first cheque, do the repair, and never send the final invoice back. That is money left with the carrier for no reason.

Which of these can I do something about?

Your deductible, no. It is a contractual figure and it is the one number in this conversation that is genuinely fixed.

Betterment, frequently yes, if you can document pre loss condition. A photograph of a roof in good condition six months before the loss rebuts a betterment deduction on that roof reasonably well.

Depreciation, sometimes. Recoverable depreciation just needs you to complete the repair and claim it. Non recoverable depreciation on an ACV policy is harder, which is the argument for agreed value coverage on a coach with any real value in it.

  • Deductible: fixed, contractual, not arguable
  • Betterment on genuinely worn consumables: usually legitimate
  • Betterment on structural or sound components: arguable, document pre loss condition
  • Recoverable depreciation: claim it after the repair, most owners forget
  • Non recoverable depreciation on ACV: hard, and the reason agreed value exists

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my insurance pay less than the approved estimate?

Almost always deductible plus betterment plus depreciation. Ask for the settlement breakdown itemised. A carrier will supply it, and once itemised you can see which deductions are actually defensible.

Do I pay my deductible to you or to the insurance company?

To us, at the repair. The carrier pays its portion and the deductible is your contribution toward the same invoice.

Should I have agreed value or actual cash value coverage on an RV?

On any coach with upgrades or collectible value, agreed value is worth the premium difference. It removes the entire ACV valuation argument, which is where the largest disputes happen.

What is recoverable depreciation and how do I get it?

It is the held back portion of an ACV payment, released once the repair is complete and documented. Send the final invoice to the carrier and ask for release. Many owners never do.

Can betterment be applied to paint?

It comes up, and it is usually weak. Paint has no discrete wear life the way a tire does, and a refinish restores rather than upgrades. Push back and ask for the basis in writing.
