Total Loss or Repairable: How Carriers Decide

A carrier compares repair cost against actual cash value. Above a threshold percentage the vehicle is totalled. Both inputs are estimates, which means both are arguable, and a photo based repair figure distorts the calculation in either direction depending on which way it errs.

Being told a coach is a total loss feels like a verdict. It is a calculation, and it is built from two numbers that are both opinions rather than facts.

That matters because the calculation is frequently run against a repair figure written from photographs, which on an RV is routinely less than half the real cost. Sometimes that keeps a vehicle out of total loss that should be totalled. Sometimes the reverse. Either way it is the wrong decision made with the wrong input.

How is the total loss decision actually calculated?

Estimated repair cost divided by actual cash value. Above a threshold percentage, which varies by carrier and by state, the vehicle is written off rather than repaired.

Both inputs move. Repair cost changes dramatically once teardown reveals real scope. ACV is a valuation built from comparables, and comparable selection on an RV with documented upgrades is a genuinely weak process. Neither number is handed down from anywhere.

What can change a total loss determination?

A documented, teardown based repair figure, which is the most powerful thing available. When a carrier is working from a photo estimate and the real figure lands materially different, the calculation changes.

On the other side, comparables reflecting your actual configuration. A coach with a documented lithium and solar install, recent tires and an upgraded interior is not comparable to a base unit of the same year, and supplying that evidence moves ACV.

  • Teardown based repair figure replacing a photo estimate
  • Comparables matching your configuration and documented upgrades
  • Documentation of aftermarket work with receipts
  • Evidence that a claimed non repairable condition is in fact repairable
  • The appraisal clause in your own policy, where valuation is the dispute

Should I retain the salvage?

Sometimes, and it needs thinking about rather than signing. Retaining means you keep the vehicle and the carrier deducts salvage value from the payout, and the title is branded.

A branded title materially affects future resale and can affect insurability. Where it makes sense is a coach you intend to keep long term and repair yourself or through us over time. Where it does not is a vehicle you expect to sell within a few years.

Common Problems and How We Solve Them

The carrier totalled my coach and I think it is repairable.

SolutionWe produce a documented teardown based repair figure and an itemised upgrade record. Total loss decisions made against a photo estimate frequently change once real numbers exist.

The ACV they offered is far below what the coach is worth.

SolutionACV is built from comparables and comparable selection is arguable. Supply listings reflecting your configuration and documented upgrades, and read the appraisal clause in your policy.

I was told the frame damage makes it non repairable.

SolutionMost frame damage is repairable. Non repairable means torn metal, corrosion below usable section, or a prior repair that compromised the metallurgy. We measure and tell you which case you are actually in.

Frequently Asked Questions

What percentage of value triggers a total loss?

It varies by carrier and by state, and there is no single national figure. What matters more is that the repair cost input is accurate, because that is the part most often wrong on an RV.

Can OCRV Center help me contest a total loss?

We supply documentation: a teardown based repair figure, dimensional measurements, and an itemised record of upgrades. We do not negotiate settlements, because that is public adjuster work.

Do you buy total loss coaches?

No. We are a repair facility, not a dealer or a salvage buyer.

If I retain salvage, can you repair it?

Usually yes, and we will assess it honestly first. On a retained salvage the whole point is knowing the real repair figure before you commit, so we measure and scope before quoting.
