Teardown and Supplements Explained
A supplement is a documented addition to an approved estimate covering damage found once the vehicle came apart. It is not a shop adding charges. It is the carrier being shown what was actually broken. On laminated RVs, hidden damage exceeds visible damage on most structural claims.
This is the single biggest source of distrust in collision repair and almost nobody explains the mechanism, so here it is in full.
If a shop never writes supplements, one of two things is true. It is not tearing vehicles down, or it is absorbing the difference by cutting corners on the repair. Neither is good news for the owner.
Why is the visible damage so much smaller than the real damage?
Because of how a laminated sidewall carries load. Outer skin, adhesive, substrate, framing, interior panel. That adhesive bond makes the whole assembly act as one stiff panel, which is what lets a thin skin and a light frame carry a coach down the road.
When an impact breaks that bond, the failure travels well past the point where the skin visibly deformed. Tap testing routinely maps a debonded area several times larger than the visible mark. That is not an exaggeration for effect, it is a measurement, and it is why the photograph of the tape map is the most persuasive document in the file.
What makes a supplement get approved instead of queried?
Evidence, in a specific form. Photographs taken during teardown that show the damage and its context. Measurements against published factory specification. A written narrative explaining why the newly found damage is causally connected to the loss rather than pre existing.
Adjusters approve what they can defend internally. Give them a documented file and they can. Give them an assertion and they cannot, so they query it, and the claim stalls for another week.
- Teardown photographs showing damage in context, not close ups alone
- Dimensional measurements against factory datum specification
- Tap test and moisture maps on laminated panels, taped and photographed
- A written causation narrative connecting findings to the loss
- Manufacturer procedure citations where a repair operation is required
How many supplements is normal?
On a cosmetic repair, none. On a moderate claim, one. On structural work, two or three is entirely normal because damage is discovered in stages as layers come off.
We say this at intake rather than at week five. An owner told to expect staged discovery reads the second supplement as process. An owner told nothing reads it as a shop inventing charges, and they are not unreasonable for doing so.
What Is Included
- 01Written teardown authorization requested before disassembly begins
- 02Photographic documentation at every teardown stage
- 03Dimensional measurement against published factory specification
- 04Tap test and moisture mapping on laminated panels, marked and photographed
- 05Written causation narrative submitted with every supplement
- 06No supplemental work performed before the carrier approves it
Our Process and Timeline
Shop hours and calendar days are different things. These are the stages and the realistic duration of each.
- 012 to 5 days
Request teardown authorization
Written authorization is requested before disassembly. Without it, discovery cannot be billed and will not be paid.
- 021 to 4 days
Disassemble and document
Assemblies come off in sequence, with photographs at each stage rather than only at the end.
- 031 day
Map and measure
Tap testing and moisture metering define the real boundary on laminated panels. Datum points are measured.
- 041 day
Submit the supplement
Findings, photographs, measurements and a causation narrative go to the carrier as one package.
- 053 to 9 days
Await approval
No supplemental work begins before written approval. This is the stage that usually holds the calendar.
Common Problems and How We Solve Them
The carrier says the supplement is not related to the accident.
SolutionThat is a causation argument, and it is answered with a causation narrative plus pre repair documentation showing the condition the vehicle arrived in.
My adjuster wants to reinspect before approving, adding two weeks.
SolutionReinspection is reasonable and we facilitate it. A well documented supplement package frequently avoids the need, because there is nothing left to see that the file does not already show.
I was told the estimate was final and now it is not.
SolutionNo pre teardown estimate on structural work is final and no honest shop will claim otherwise. What can be final is the method: hours times posted rate, evidence for anything added.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my RV repair estimate go up after teardown?
Because the first estimate was written from visible damage and teardown exposed what the impact actually did. On laminated coaches that difference routinely exceeds the original figure.
Am I responsible for paying supplement amounts?
Not on a covered claim with an approved supplement. Your exposure remains the deductible plus any coverage limitation such as betterment or an unlisted aftermarket item.
What if the carrier refuses the supplement outright?
We supply the documentation and the manufacturer procedure citations in writing. Where the dispute is about valuation rather than fact, most policies contain an appraisal mechanism worth reading.
Does teardown cost me anything if the claim is denied?
Teardown is billable work at the posted rate. If a carrier denies the claim entirely, that time is customer pay, which is exactly why written authorization matters before it starts.
Can you predict what teardown will find?
Partially. Damage patterns on a given construction type are fairly consistent, so we can tell you what is likely. Pretending to know precisely would be guessing with your money.
