RV Delamination Repair in Yorba Linda

Delamination is the failure of the adhesive bond between an RV skin and its substrate, appearing as bubbles, waves or soft areas in a sidewall, roof or slide face. Repair requires mapping the true boundary, drying the structure, then relaminating. Cost runs $1,500 to $20,000 and up at 10 to 100 labor hours.

Delamination is the most expensive thing that happens to an RV that is not an accident, and it is almost entirely preventable. It is also the repair most often done wrong, because the visible symptom is a small area and the actual failure is a large one.

If you can see a bubble, the bond has already failed over a substantially larger area than the bubble. The bubble is just where the skin had enough freedom to move.

What causes RV delamination?

Water, in nearly every case. It enters at a failed seam, a window frame, a roof penetration, a marker light or a screw hole, and it wicks laterally between skin and substrate. The adhesive fails wherever the water reaches.

Heat accelerates it. Southern California sun drives panel surface temperatures well above ambient, and every heat cycle works a weakened bond a little further loose. A coach that would delaminate slowly in a mild climate does it faster here.

Substrate matters. Azdel does not absorb water so the damage stays as a bond failure. Lauan absorbs it, swells, rots, and loses the ability to hold adhesive at all, which turns a bond repair into a substrate replacement.

How do you find out how far it has spread?

Tap testing, systematically, across the entire panel and not just around the visible symptom.

A sound laminate rings. A debonded area thuds. The transition is audible and repeatable, and we mark the boundary directly on the panel with tape as we find it, then photograph the marked panel. That photograph is what shows an owner and a carrier why a repair that looks like it should cost twelve hundred dollars costs nine thousand.

Moisture metering runs alongside it to determine whether water is still present and where it is entering. Repairing a delamination without finding the entry point is guaranteed rework.

Can delamination be injected or does the wall have to come off?

Injection works on small, dry, isolated areas with sound substrate. Adhesive is injected through small ports and the panel is clamped while it cures. When conditions suit it, this is a genuinely good repair.

It fails when it is used outside those conditions, which is unfortunately common. Injecting into a wet panel bonds nothing. Injecting into a rotted lauan substrate bonds to material that has no strength. Injecting a large area does not achieve consistent clamping pressure and leaves voids.

Larger or wet or rotted areas need the skin removed, the substrate replaced, and the panel relaminated properly. That is the top of the price range and there is no shortcut to it that lasts.

How do I stop it happening again?

Reseal on a schedule, not on symptoms. Roof seams, window frames, marker lights, antenna bases, ladder mounts and every roof penetration should be inspected annually and resealed on a defined interval rather than when a leak appears.

Nearly every delamination repair we perform traces back to a sealant that was years past its service life. A reseal at $750 to $4,500 prevents a delamination at $1,500 to $20,000. That is the whole maintenance case in one sentence.

SolutionFrequently correct where it developed gradually from a long standing leak, since that reads as maintenance. Where it followed a covered impact or a sudden water event it is a different conversation, and documentation is what makes that case.

Can delamination be fixed permanently?

It is structural. A debonded panel has lost most of its stiffness, which matters around slide openings, windows and anywhere the wall carries load. It is not an emergency, but it is not cosmetic either.

Does insurance cover delamination?

Following a covered impact or sudden water event, generally yes. Gradual delamination from an aged seal is usually excluded as maintenance.

How can I prevent delamination?
