The Roles That Do the Work
An RV collision repair needs eight distinct specialisms: estimating, claims coordination, structural repair, lamination, refinishing, systems work, fabrication and quality control. On a single coach a job frequently passes through six of them, which is why the handoffs matter as much as the skills.
There is a tendency on pages like this to list names and headshots. What is more useful is understanding what each role actually does, because that tells you who is making the decisions that affect your vehicle.
These are the eight roles a structural RV repair moves through.
Who decides what the repair is?
The estimator, working from measurement rather than appearance. This role writes the initial scope, produces the documented supplement after teardown, and is the person who has to be able to defend every line to an adjuster.
The claims coordinator handles everything after that. Carrier submission, supplement follow up, reinspection scheduling and the direct billing. This role exists specifically so the vehicle owner is not relaying technical arguments between a shop and an adjuster.
Who does the structural and body work?
The structural technician handles measurement, anchoring, staged pulling and welded section repair. This is the role that determines whether a frame comes back within factory tolerance, and it is certified welding work rather than general body work.
The laminator is the specialism most people have never heard of and it is central to RV repair. Tap test mapping, moisture metering, substrate replacement and relamination under controlled clamping pressure. Nearly every expensive RV repair is a lamination problem wearing a different name.
The painter works the two 65 foot downdraft booths. Colour matching to a sun faded vehicle rather than to a factory code, and blending into adjacent panels so a repair has no boundary line.
- Estimator: scope, measurement, supplement documentation
- Claims coordinator: carrier submission, follow up, direct billing
- Structural technician: measurement, anchoring, pulling, certified welding
- Laminator: tap mapping, moisture, substrate, relamination
- Painter: colour match to current condition, blend, cure control
- Systems technician: 12V and 120V, LP, plumbing, appliances, ADAS
- Fabricator: panel moulding, aluminium forming, racks and structural members
- Quality control lead: multi point inspection and final measurement
Why does quality control get its own role?
Because the person who did the work is the worst person to inspect it. That is not a comment on anybody, it is how attention works.
The quality control lead runs the multi point inspection, verifies systems operation, confirms post repair measurement is within tolerance, and signs the vehicle off before it leaves. On a job that passed through six specialisms, somebody has to be responsible for the whole thing rather than a stage of it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do you not list individual names and photographs?
Because what affects your vehicle is which specialisms touch it and how the handoffs are managed, not who is smiling in a photograph. If you want to speak to the person handling your job, ask and we will put you through.
Who will I actually deal with?
The estimator at intake and for scope questions, and the claims coordinator for anything carrier related. On a long job those two are your points of contact throughout.
Is the welding on structural repairs certified?
Yes. Structural welding and frame section repair is certified technician work. We do not put general body technicians on load bearing welds.
Can I speak to the technician working on my vehicle?
By arrangement, yes. Mid teardown is often the most useful time to do it, because seeing the finding explained on the vehicle makes a supplement far clearer than reading it does.
