RV Ceramic Coating in Yorba Linda

Ceramic coating is a silica based liquid that cures into a hard, hydrophobic layer bonded to the finish. On recreational vehicles it is applied over gelcoat or clear coat after correction. Preparation is the large majority of the work, and the coating itself is the last few hours.

Ceramic coating is the most oversold product in vehicle care and it is also genuinely useful, which makes honest conversation about it difficult. Both things are true at once.

What it does well: it bonds to the surface, it is far more durable than wax, it sheds water strongly, it resists chemical staining, and on a recreational vehicle in Southern California it slows ultraviolet degradation of gelcoat meaningfully. What it does not do is prevent scratches, remove existing defects or eliminate maintenance.

Why is preparation most of the job?

Because a coating bonds to whatever is on the surface and then locks it there. Apply it over swirl marks and you have durable swirl marks. Apply it over oxidized gelcoat and you have sealed the chalk in place under a layer that resists removal.

The correct sequence is decontamination, correction to the level the finish will support, a panel wipe to remove polishing oils, then application. That panel wipe stage is the one most often skipped and it matters enormously, because polishing residues left on the surface prevent the coating bonding and produce patchy durability that shows up months later.

On a 40 foot coach, the preparation is measured in days and the coating application is measured in hours. Anyone quoting a coating on a large RV as a one day job is not correcting the surface first, and the result will be a shiny vehicle that looks exactly as it does now, permanently.

Does ceramic coating work on gelcoat?

Yes, and arguably it is more useful on gelcoat than on paint. Gelcoat is porous once it has begun to oxidize and it has no clear layer protecting it. A coating gives it a sacrificial hard surface that takes the ultraviolet and chemical exposure instead.

The preparation requirement is stricter though. Oxidized gelcoat has to be compounded back to sound material before coating, and the porosity means the surface has to be thoroughly cleaned and dried so the coating bonds to gelcoat rather than to residue trapped in the pores.

Realistic durability on a coach living outdoors in Southern California sun is shorter than the marketing figures suggest. A coating rated for several years on a garaged car is exposed to far more ultraviolet on an RV roof and sidewall. Plan on maintenance products designed to top up the coating and on reapplication sooner than the label implies.

What does a coating realistically deliver?

Easier washing, and this is the benefit owners appreciate most. Contamination has much less to bond to, so black streaks, bug residue and road film release with far less effort. On a vehicle with 400 square feet of sidewall that is a meaningful saving in time every wash.

Chemical and ultraviolet resistance, which matters on gelcoat particularly. Slowing oxidation extends the interval between compounding sessions, and since every compounding removes gelcoat permanently, extending that interval extends the life of the finish itself.

What it does not deliver is scratch resistance in any practical sense. A coating is a few microns thick and hard on a molecular scale, not on a branch scraping down the side of your coach scale. It also does not remove existing defects, does not eliminate washing, and does not make the vehicle immune to bird droppings if they are left to bake in the sun.

Common Problems and How We Solve Them

A previous coating looks patchy and beads unevenly.
