RV Ceramic Coating Application in Yorba Linda

A ceramic coating is a thin silica based layer that chemically bonds to paint or gelcoat, resisting chemical etching and making the surface far easier to clean. It is applied over corrected paint in a controlled shop environment. It does not stop rock chips or physical impact.

Ceramic coating gets sold with a lot of language that does not survive contact with a rock at highway speed. Here is what it actually is: a silica based liquid that crosslinks into a hard, thin, transparent layer chemically bonded to the surface, usually a couple of microns thick.

What that layer does well is resist acid etching from bird droppings, bug residue, hard water spots and industrial fallout, and dramatically reduce how hard the vehicle is to wash. On a 40 foot coach that owners wash by hand on a ladder, the reduction in washing effort alone is the strongest argument for it.

Ceramic coating versus paint protection film versus wax: what does each one do?

Wax and traditional sealants are sacrificial layers sitting on top of the paint. Carnauba lasts weeks in Southern California heat, synthetic sealants a few months. They add gloss and some water beading and they wash away. They are maintenance, not protection.

Ceramic coating is chemical protection. It bonds rather than sits, it resists solvents and acids that would etch bare clear, and it holds its properties for years rather than months. It is thin and hard, which means it resists chemical attack extremely well and does essentially nothing against physical impact. A rock that would chip your paint chips your paint through a ceramic coating.

Paint protection film is a 6 to 8 mil urethane film that physically absorbs impact. It is the only one of the three that stops rock chips, and on RVs it is applied to the specific surfaces that take the abuse: front cap, lower front corners, the leading edge above the windshield, and rock guard areas on towables. It is the most expensive per square foot by a wide margin, which is why nobody films an entire coach.

  • Ceramic coating: bonded chemical resistance and easier cleaning, multi year

Why does the surface have to be corrected before coating?

Because a ceramic coating is transparent and it locks in whatever is underneath. Swirls, oxidation, water spot etching and sanding marks are all preserved under a layer that is specifically designed not to come off. Coating over defects is the most expensive way to keep them.

The correction requirement is also why a properly done coating job is mostly not the coating. On a large coach the preparation, decontamination and correction consume the vast majority of the hours, and the coating application itself is a controlled but comparatively short process. Any quote where the coating is the majority of the cost is a quote that is not correcting the surface.

The last preparation step is a solvent or dedicated prep wipe to strip every trace of polishing oil off the surface. Coating applied over residual oils bonds to the oil rather than to the paint, and it fails in patches within months. This step takes real time on a thousand square feet and it is the one most often rushed.

Can you coat gelcoat, and can you coat fresh paint?

Gelcoat takes ceramic coating extremely well, and on RVs it is arguably a better application than on paint. Gelcoat is porous and oxidizes readily, which is exactly the failure mode a bonded coating slows down. A compounded, polished and coated gelcoat coach stays looking correct far longer than one that gets waxed twice a year.

Fresh paint is a timing question. A newly sprayed 2K urethane clear is still releasing solvent for days after it feels hard. Sealing that surface traps the solvent and produces dieback, where gloss visibly drops weeks later. We schedule ceramic application at least a week after final clear on work sprayed here, and we ask for at least 30 days on paint sprayed elsewhere because we do not know their cure schedule.

Application itself happens in shop with controlled temperature and humidity, in a clean environment. Coating flashed in a dusty open air setting cures with the dust in it, and dust in a bonded layer is permanent.

    Assessment and thickness measurement

    Surfaces are read for remaining film and evaluated for defects, oxidation and any coating already present that has to come off.

    Full surface solvent wipe removes polishing oils. On a large coach this is a slow, deliberate stage and it decides whether the coating bonds.

Common Problems and How We Solve Them

A coating was applied to my RV and it is failing in patches after six months.

SolutionAlmost always residual polishing oil at the prep stage, so the coating bonded to oil instead of paint. The failed coating has to be removed by machine and the surface prepped again properly before recoating.

I had my coach coated and it still got rock chips on the front cap.

SolutionCeramic is chemical protection, not physical. Only paint protection film stops impact. On coaches we recommend film on the front cap and leading edges with ceramic over the top of it and across the rest of the vehicle.

The coating looks hazy and streaked in certain light.

SolutionHigh spots from coating that was not leveled inside its working window. It has to be machine removed and reapplied. Working panel by panel under multiple light sources is how that is prevented in the first place.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a ceramic coating last on an RV?

Two to five years on vertical surfaces depending on the product, wash habits and storage. Horizontal surfaces take far more UV and degrade sooner. Coatings do not fail all at once, they lose water behavior and easy cleaning gradually.

Can I wash my RV normally after coating?

Yes, and gently. Two bucket hand washing with a pH neutral soap keeps a coating performing. Avoid aggressive alkaline cleaners and stiff brushes, which strip the coating faster than sun does. Written guidance goes with the vehicle.

How soon after painting can a coating be applied?

At least seven days after the final clear on work sprayed here, and at least 30 days on paint applied at another shop. Sealing a film that has not finished curing traps solvent and drops the gloss weeks later.

Is ceramic coating worth it on an older oxidized coach?

Only after correction. On a compounded and polished gelcoat coach, yes, because gelcoat oxidizes readily and a bonded coating slows that considerably. Coating over oxidation locks the oxidation in permanently.

Do you install paint protection film too?

Yes, on the surfaces where it earns its cost: front caps, lower leading edges, the area above the windshield and rock strike zones on towables. Filming an entire coach is not something we recommend, and we will explain why rather than sell it.
