Fiberglass Crack, Hole and Impact Repair in Yorba Linda

Crack, hole and impact repair addresses localised fiberglass damage from road debris, punctures and stress. The critical distinction is between impact cracks, which are self contained, and stress cracks, which will return unless the underlying flex is corrected.

Two cracks can look identical and need completely different work. One was caused by something hitting the panel. The other was caused by the panel moving. Filling both the same way means one of them comes back.

Telling them apart is straightforward once you know what to look for, and it is the first thing we do.

Impact crack or stress crack?

Impact cracks radiate outward from a single point and there is usually a mark, a gouge or a depression at the origin. They are self contained. Repair the laminate and the problem is over.

Stress cracks start at a discontinuity such as a window corner, a slide opening corner, a cap seam or a fastener, and they run along a line rather than radiating from a point. There is no impact mark. They are a symptom of panel flex exceeding what the laminate can absorb at that location.

A stress crack that is filled and painted will crack again in the same place, typically within one to two years. That is not a bad repair, it is the correct repair applied to the wrong diagnosis.

How are punctures and holes repaired properly?

The damaged laminate is removed well past the visible damage, because the laminate is compromised further than it is broken. The opening is then scarfed, meaning the edges are tapered back over a wide margin so the repair laminate can be built up in overlapping layers rather than butt joined.

Butt joined fiberglass repairs are the most common failure we see. They create a hard boundary where the new material meets the old, and that boundary becomes a stress riser that cracks. A properly scarfed repair has no boundary, it has a gradient.

Substrate behind the hole gets replaced, and if the puncture let water in, the surrounding area gets metered and dried before anything is bonded.

What causes stress cracking and how is it actually fixed?

Three usual causes. Framing that has fatigued and no longer supports the panel. A slide mechanism that loads the opening as it cycles. Or a bonded joint nearby that has failed, transferring load into an area not designed for it.

Fixing it means finding which one applies. That may mean removing an interior panel to inspect framing, checking slide alignment and operation, or tap testing the surrounding area for a hidden debond.

Once the cause is corrected, the crack is repaired with a scarfed laminate and the panel is refinished. Done in that order it does not come back.

Common Problems and How We Solve Them

The same crack has been repaired twice and returned twice.

SolutionIt is a stress crack and nobody has addressed the flex causing it. We investigate the structure before repairing the laminate again.

The repair shows as a raised line.

SolutionA butt joint rather than a scarfed repair. The correct fix is to remove it and rebuild with tapered overlapping layers.

Water got in through the hole and now the wall feels soft nearby.

SolutionThe puncture caused a local delamination. We meter, map the debond, dry it and repair both together.

Simple impact cracks sit at the low end of the $750 and up fiberglass band. Stress cracks cost more because correcting the underlying flex is part of the job.

Why does my crack keep coming back?

It is a stress crack. The panel is flexing at that point and until the framing, slide alignment or adjacent bonding is corrected it will crack again regardless of repair quality.

Can a hole in a fiberglass RV wall be repaired invisibly?

Yes, with a properly scarfed laminate and a blended refinish. What shows is butt joints and repairs that stop at a panel seam instead of blending.

Yes, because they are a water entry path. A crack that costs a few hundred dollars this season becomes a delamination costing thousands after a winter of water entry.
