Subframe Repair for RVs and Commercial Vehicles in Yorba Linda
Subframe repair addresses the secondary structure that carries the house on a chassis: outriggers, crossmembers, floor supports and slide rail mounting structure. This is where most RV structural failure actually occurs, and it usually presents as a soft floor rather than an obvious frame problem.
The main frame rails on most RVs are substantially overbuilt. The structure that fails is almost never the rails. It is the outriggers cantilevered off them that carry the sidewalls, and the crossmembers that carry the floor.
That distinction matters because owners are told they have a frame problem and reasonably assume the worst. In the large majority of cases the rails are fine and the repair is a fraction of what a full frame correction would cost.
Why do RV outriggers and crossmembers fail?
They are loaded in a way that fatigues them. An outrigger is a cantilever, meaning the sidewall load applies a bending moment at the weld where it meets the rail. Every road input cycles that moment. Over enough cycles the weld toe cracks, and once it does, load transfers to the neighbouring outriggers and the failure propagates.
Crossmembers fail the same way, usually accelerated by two things: water intrusion that has rotted the floor above and removed the composite stiffness the system relied on, and slide out cutouts that removed material from the middle of the span without adequate reinforcement.
How does subframe failure show up?
Almost always as a soft or bouncy floor in one area. Owners typically call about a flooring problem.
Other indicators are a slide that has started to bind or drop at the outer edge, a sidewall that has developed a visible bulge or wave low down, and separation appearing at the joint between the sidewall and the floor line.
- Soft, springy or bouncy floor in one localised area
- Slide out that drops or binds at the outboard edge
- Low sidewall bulge or waviness
- Separation at the sidewall to floor joint
- Visible cracking at outrigger to rail welds
- Belly pan sagging in an area with no obvious cause
How is subframe repair done properly?
The belly pan comes off and the entire subframe is inspected, not just the area the customer reported. Fatigue failure is progressive, and repairing one cracked outrigger while leaving three partially cracked neighbours guarantees a return visit.
Cracked members are cut out rather than plated over. Plating a fatigue crack relocates the stress riser to the edge of the plate and it cracks again there. New material is spliced in with full penetration welds by certified technicians, and reinforcement is added where the original section was clearly inadequate for the load it carries.
Where water intrusion caused the failure, the source is fixed before the structure is closed up. Otherwise the repair is on a timer.
What Is Included

- 02Documentation of every cracked or compromised member found
- 03Section removal and splicing with certified full penetration welding
- 04Reinforcement where the original section was inadequate for the load
- 05Water intrusion source identification and repair before closing up
- 06Corrosion treatment and protective coating on all repaired steel
Our Process and Timeline
Shop hours and calendar days are different things. These are the stages and the realistic duration of each.
- 011 to 2 days
Access and inspection
Belly pan and insulation removed. The entire subframe is inspected and every finding is photographed.
- 021 to 5 days
Documentation and scope
Findings documented with photographs and a written scope agreed, including any carrier supplement.
- 032 to 8 days
Section and splice
Compromised members cut out and new material spliced in with full penetration welds.
- 041 to 3 days
Reinforce and protect
Reinforcement added where the original section was inadequate, then corrosion treatment and coating applied.
- 051 to 2 days
Close and verify
Insulation and belly pan reinstalled, floor and slide operation verified.
Common Problems and How We Solve Them
The floor is soft and a flooring contractor said the subfloor is fine.
SolutionBecause it frequently is. A soft floor over a sound subfloor means the structure beneath it moved. That is a subframe inspection, not a flooring job.
Someone welded a plate over the crack and it cracked again beside the plate.
SolutionExpected outcome. A plate moves a fatigue crack to the plate edge. Correct repair removes the cracked section entirely and splices in new material.
My slide has started dropping at the outer corner.
SolutionOften the subframe under the slide opening rather than the slide mechanism. We inspect the structure before touching the mechanism.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does subframe repair cost?
It sits inside the $750 to $20,000 and up structural band at 5 to 80 or more labor hours. A single outrigger is at the low end. A full subframe rebuild on a large fifth wheel is at the high end.
Is a soft floor always a subframe problem?
No. It can be a rotted subfloor from water intrusion. But the two frequently occur together, because a rotted floor removes the composite stiffness the crossmembers relied on and they then fatigue.
Will insurance cover subframe repair?
If the failure came from an impact, yes under collision. Fatigue cracking from normal use is a maintenance item and generally not covered. Water damage depends on the source and your specific policy.
Can you repair it without removing the interior?
In most cases yes, because the work is done from underneath after the belly pan comes off. Interior removal is only needed where the floor itself has to come up.
