Progressively and unevenly. The four cables do not wear at the same rate, because the geometry loads them differently and because the camper is rarely parked perfectly level. One cable stretches, one corner starts lifting late, and the roof deck goes up slightly racked. Once the deck is racked it no longer seats squarely on the body, which means the seal is compromised and the latches are being forced.

By the time an owner notices, the usual complaint is that the roof will not latch on one corner. The cable is the cause but the deck geometry is the symptom, and replacing one cable into a system where the other three are also stretched simply moves the problem.

We replace lift cables in sets and re tension the system as a unit, then cycle it repeatedly to confirm the deck rises level and seats evenly. Pulleys, bushings and the torsion mechanism are inspected at the same time because a seized pulley is what stretched the cable in the first place.

Because it is a large, thin, horizontal laminated panel that carries the AC unit, the roof vent and often a rack, and it spends its life either exposed to sun or clamped down on a seal that may or may not be sealing. Any penetration that loses its bedding lets water into the core.

Pop-up roof decks are commonly aluminum or fiberglass skin over a foam or lauan core. Where the core is lauan, water turns it to pulp and the deck sags between the perimeter rails, which then prevents it from seating and starts the whole cycle again. Where the core is foam, the failure is bond loss rather than rot and the panel stays flat longer.

Both are routine. Localized damage, a torn screen, a failed zipper, a seam that opened, or a small abrasion hole is repaired by patching and restitching. Broad mildew, brittleness from ultraviolet exposure, or abrasion along every fold line means replacement, because a patch on brittle fabric tears out next to the patch.

The test we use is simple. If the fabric still has stretch and the coating has not powdered, it is repairable. If it crackles when folded, it is done. Canvas work is quoted separately from body work so you can see exactly what each portion of the job costs.

Replacement sets are available for most mainstream brands. On discontinued units the canvas is made to pattern from the existing set, which is why we ask owners not to discard damaged canvas before the new set is fabricated.
