Class B Camper Van Repair in Yorba Linda

Class B camper vans are built inside a factory van body from Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit or Ram ProMaster. The shell is automotive steel with factory collision procedures and driver assist sensors, so repair combines automotive body work with recreational vehicle systems work.

A Class B is the only motorhome where the body is a mass produced automotive assembly. Winnebago, Storyteller, Thor, Coachmen and dozens of small builders all start with a high roof Sprinter, Transit or ProMaster and build inside it. That means factory panels, factory sectioning procedures, factory corrosion protection and factory calibration requirements all apply.

It also means a camper van claim has two halves that carriers handle very differently. The van half is priced from automotive data and goes smoothly. The conversion half, which is often worth more than the van, is priced from nothing at all unless somebody documented it first.

Why does a camper van need ADAS recalibration after body work?

Modern Sprinters and Transits carry forward radar, a windshield camera, blind spot sensors in the rear quarters and parking sensors in both bumpers. Those systems are aimed to the vehicle body. Replace a bumper cover, a windshield or a quarter panel and the aim reference moves, even when the sensor itself was never touched.

Scan and recalibration runs $275 to $1,800 across 1 to 7 hours. We do it because a lane keeping system pointed two degrees off is worse than one that is switched off, and because a documented calibration record is what closes a claim cleanly.

The complication specific to camper vans is roof and rear modification. A raised fiberglass roof cap, a rear ladder, a bike rack or a solar array can all sit inside a sensor field of view. Where that is the case we note it, because the calibration will not hold and the owner deserves to know before the work rather than after.

How do you protect the value of a van conversion in a claim?

By documenting the build before anything comes apart. A modern Class B commonly carries a lithium house bank, a 3,000 watt inverter, a roof solar array, a diesel or gasoline auxiliary heater, custom cabinetry, a swivel seat base, insulation, sound deadening and a pop top. Van build outs are published at $5,000 to $80,000 and up across 40 to 400 hours, and none of it appears on a standard auto policy.

At intake we photograph every subsystem, itemize it, and collect receipts where the owner has them. That package goes to the carrier with the estimate. Trying to establish the value of a lithium system after the van is in pieces is a losing position and it is where most owners lose real money.

The other item worth confirming is whether the policy is written as an auto policy on a cargo van or as a motorhome policy on a Class B. Those pay very differently on the same loss.

What is different about repairing a high roof van body?

Height and material transitions. A factory high roof Sprinter or Transit roof is steel. Many converters add a bonded fiberglass pop top or an aftermarket roof cap, which creates a steel to composite joint that has no factory repair procedure at all.

Damage at that joint, from a low clearance strike or a parking structure, is the most common serious camper van repair we see after collision. It is a fabrication job: cut back to sound material on both sides, rebuild the composite, restore the bond and the sealant path, then refinish. Roof reinforcement and rack work is published at $750 to $6,500 across 4 to 30 hours.

Interior water intrusion at that joint follows quickly if the repair is done cosmetically. We pressure test the roof after any joint repair rather than relying on a visual check.

Can you repair a pop top or elevating roof?

Yes. Composite cap repair, lift mechanism service and bond restoration are all performed in shop. Because there is no factory procedure for aftermarket roofs, this is fabrication work and is quoted as such.

Most moderate van claims run two to five weeks. Factory van parts move faster than coach parts, but conversion components and pop top materials are frequently the long lead item rather than the van body panels.
