Camper Van Conversion Repair and Build Work
Converted camper vans need both body and systems capability, plus documentation discipline. The build is normally worth more than the van and is usually not scheduled on the policy, which is the single largest source of loss on van claims.
Plenty of shops can repair a stock van. Very few can repair a stock van, diagnose a lithium bank, correct a solar install and rebuild cabinetry, which is what a converted van actually needs.
Fewer still document the build before teardown, which is the step that decides whether a carrier pays for forty thousand dollars of conversion.
What has to happen before teardown on a converted van?
Photograph and itemise everything. Solar array, controller, battery bank, inverter, shore power, water system, heater, cabinetry, bed platform, roof rack, awning, insulation. With receipts where the owner has them and values where they do not.
This is fifteen minutes at intake and it is repeatedly the difference between a carrier paying for a build and having no record it existed. Once the van is in pieces, proving what was there is close to impossible.
- Solar array, controller and wiring runs
- Battery bank, BMS and charging paths
- Inverter, shore power inlet and distribution
- Water tanks, pump, plumbing and heater
- Cabinetry, bed platform and seating
- Roof rack, awning, ladder and exterior fittings
- Insulation and wall or ceiling panelling
Do you work on DIY conversions?
Regularly, and we will tell you what we find. DIY work most often goes wrong in three places: 12V wiring undersized or unfused correctly, LP installations without proper ventilation or leak testing, and lithium installations without low temperature charge protection.
None of that is a criticism of owner builders. It is what tends to be missed, and finding it during a repair is better than finding it in a fire.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will insurance pay for my van conversion?
Only if it is scheduled on the policy. Photograph and itemise everything with values now and send the schedule to your agent. Undocumented build value is the largest single loss on van claims.
Can you rebuild the conversion after structural work?
Yes. Components are catalogued during removal and reinstalled afterward. That labor is itemised on the estimate rather than absorbed.
Do you build conversions from scratch?
Yes. Custom build out including camper conversion runs $5,000 to $80,000 and up at 40 to 400 labor hours depending on specification.
What do you find wrong with DIY builds most often?
Undersized or improperly fused 12V wiring, LP installations without proper ventilation and leak testing, and lithium banks without low temperature charge protection.
