Comparisons That Actually Help You Decide
Four comparisons that decide most repair outcomes: roofing material, sidewall substrate, slide out system, and dealer service against an independent specialist. These are neutral. Two of the four have answers that work against us commercially and are included anyway.
Comparison pages on shop websites are usually us against them, which makes them advertising rather than information.
These four are the comparisons that actually change what a repair costs and how it should be approached. Where the honest answer does not favour us, it says so.
Roofing: EPDM, TPO, fiberglass or aluminium?
EPDM is synthetic rubber, flexible, easily repaired, and chalks over time as a normal part of its life. TPO is thermoplastic, heat weldable, generally more puncture resistant, and increasingly standard on newer coaches. Fiberglass is rigid, durable and the most expensive to repair when it cracks. Aluminium is found on older and Airstream style construction and repairs as sheet metal rather than membrane.
For repair purposes the important distinction is that membrane roofs fail at seams and penetrations while rigid roofs fail by cracking. Reseal work at $750 to $4,500 addresses the first. The second is a laminate repair.
- EPDM: flexible, repairable, chalks normally, reseal $750 to $4,500
- TPO: heat weldable, better puncture resistance, similar reseal cost
- Fiberglass: rigid, durable, cracks rather than tears, laminate repair required
- Aluminium: sheet metal repair, common on vintage and Airstream construction
- Full membrane replacement across all types: $3,500 to $18,000 and up
Substrate: Azdel or lauan?
This one decides more repair outcomes than any other single factor and almost no owner knows which they have. Azdel is a polypropylene composite and does not absorb water. Lauan is thin plywood and does.
Same leak, two outcomes. On Azdel the water destroys the adhesive bond and you have a delamination, repairable by mapping, drying and relaminating. On lauan the substrate swells and rots, and there is nothing left with the strength to hold adhesive, so the substrate has to come out. That difference is frequently the gap between a $3,000 repair and a $14,000 one.
Slide systems: Schwintek, Above Floor, Flush Floor or hydraulic?
Schwintek is an in wall rack and pinion system with a motor at each side. Compact and light, but synchronisation loss between the two motors is its characteristic failure and rail wear is common. Lippert Above Floor is mounted above the floor line, mechanically simpler and considerably more accessible to service. Flush Floor sits level with the coach floor when extended, which is nicer to live with and more complex to fix. Hydraulic is used on heavy rooms and fails at seals and valves rather than at gears.
Diagnostically the question on any of them is the same: motor, controller, rails, synchronisation or wall flex. Getting that answer right is the difference between a $500 repair and a $7,500 one, and it is why we diagnose before quoting.
Dealer service or independent specialist?
Here is where the honest answer does not always favour us. For work covered by a manufacturer programme, or for anything requiring a factory authorised part or software procedure, the dealer is frequently the correct choice and we will say so.
Where an independent specialist wins is structural capability, cycle time on collision work, and fabrication. Dealers generally subcontract structural repair and fiberglass work, which adds handoffs. We do it in the building. For a collision claim, that difference is typically measured in weeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find out whether my coach uses Azdel or lauan?
Manufacturer literature for the model year usually states it, and a moisture reading plus a tap test on a known wet area tells you quickly. Lauan built coaches from a leak feel soft. Azdel built ones sound hollow but stay firm.
Which slide system is best?
Above Floor is the easiest to service and Flush Floor is the nicest to live with. Best depends on whether you value serviceability or the floor being level, and you do not get to choose after purchase anyway.
Should I convert my EPDM roof to something else?
Rarely worth it. A well maintained EPDM roof with sealant reapplied on schedule outlasts a neglected TPO one. Maintenance discipline matters far more than material choice.
When should I use a dealer instead of you?
Manufacturer programme work, factory authorised parts, or anything needing proprietary software. We would rather tell you that than take a job we are not the right choice for.
