Hybrid Fleet Vehicle Body Repair

Hybrids are the awkward middle case. They carry a high voltage system requiring disable procedure, but they also retain a conventional drivetrain, so the packaging is tighter and high voltage cabling runs through areas a body technician needs to access.

A hybrid has all the high voltage requirements of an electric vehicle and all the mechanical packaging of a conventional one, in the same space. That makes them fiddlier than either.

The high voltage cabling in particular tends to run through exactly the areas a rear or side impact repair needs to access.

What makes hybrids more awkward than full EVs?

Packaging density. A full EV has a relatively clean underside and a flat pack. A hybrid has an engine, transmission, exhaust, fuel system, a battery pack and high voltage cabling all competing for the same space.

Practically that means more time identifying what is where before cutting or welding anywhere. High voltage cable routing on hybrids is frequently less obvious than on a purpose designed EV, and getting it wrong is not a minor mistake.

How does this affect a fleet?

Similar to EVs but with more variability. Some hybrid platforms are straightforward. Others route high voltage through the rocker or under the rear seat area, which means a routine side impact repair needs procedure that a comparable conventional van would not.
