Overland vehicles carry more aftermarket weight than almost anything else on the road, and that weight changes how the structure behaves in an impact. It also frequently puts the vehicle at or over its rated capacity, which matters for both repair and safety.

A well built overland vehicle is one of the more impressive things that comes through the shop and also one of the heaviest relative to its chassis. Racks, drawers, water, fuel, recovery gear, a rooftop tent and a full lithium bank add up faster than most owners have calculated.

That matters for repair because weight distribution changes how force travels through a structure.

How does aftermarket weight change a repair?

A roof rack through bolted to the rails transmits load into a roof structure that was not designed for it. Drawers bolted to a floor pan do the same lower down. In an impact those attachment points become load paths, and damage frequently shows up at a bracket rather than at the point of contact.

Practically this means we inspect every aftermarket attachment point on an overland vehicle rather than only the damage area. It is one of the more common places we find something the initial estimate missed.

Am I over my rated weight?

Quite possibly, and it is worth knowing rather than guessing. Take the vehicle loaded as you actually travel to a scale and compare against the door placard.

This matters beyond compliance. An overloaded axle changes tyre wear, braking distance and how the suspension mounting points fatigue over time. Several structural repairs we do on overland vehicles are fatigue rather than impact, and overload is why.

Do you fabricate overland racks and bumpers?

Yes, in house. Custom bumpers and racks run $750 to $3,500 at 4 to 14 labor hours, and heavier custom fabrication runs higher depending on design.

Will my aftermarket build be covered on a claim?

Only if it is scheduled on the policy. Photograph and itemise everything with values now and send it to your agent. Overland builds are among the most commonly undervalued on claims.

Can you tell me if my build is overweight?

We can inspect attachment points and advise on load paths. For actual weight, take the vehicle loaded to a public scale and compare against the door placard. That is a number worth having.

Do you repair fatigue damage from overloading?

Yes, and we will tell you it is fatigue rather than impact if that is what the measurement shows. Repairing it without addressing the load that caused it just resets a timer.
