Grand Design RV Repair in Yorba Linda
OCRV Center repairs Grand Design fifth wheels and travel trailers at our Yorba Linda facility. Grand Design builds a fully laminated sidewall over an aluminum framed wall on a Lippert frame, and the recurring failures are front cap seams, slide opening geometry and Momentum ramp door frames.
Grand Design has a better build reputation than most of the volume brands and it is largely earned, but the construction is still a laminated wall on a Lippert frame, and that means the same failure modes appear, just later.
The Momentum toy hauler line is the exception worth calling out, because a ramp door is a hole in the structural rear wall and the frame around it is the thing that fatigues.
How is a Grand Design built?
Aluminum framed walls with a laminated assembly bonded over them, composite substrate on current production, and a fiberglass exterior skin. Roof is a one piece membrane over decking. Frame is Lippert with Dexter or Lippert running gear.
The laminated assembly is a genuine strength when the bond is intact and a genuine liability once water reaches it. Composite substrate does not rot, which sounds like good news and means a leak sits quietly debonding adhesive rather than announcing itself as a soft spot.

What actually fails on a Grand Design?
Front cap seams, as on every laminated towable, because the joint is sealed rather than structural and the cap takes highway wind pressure. Then slide opening geometry, particularly on the larger Solitude units running multiple heavy slides, where the opening racks over years and the mechanism pays for it.
On Momentum toy haulers, the rear frame around the ramp opening. That frame carries what the missing rear wall used to, plus the hinge load of a vehicle being driven up the ramp, and cracking at the opening corner radius is the characteristic finding.

Delamination repair $1,500 to $20,000 and up at 10 to 100 hours. Front cap repair $750 to $12,000 and up, full cap replacement $4,500 to $25,000 and up. Slide mechanism service $500 to $8,500 and up. Frame and structural work $750 to $20,000 and up.
All at our posted $210 per hour body and paint rate and $260 per hour mechanical and electrical rate, with paint supplies at $55 per paint hour and 7.75 percent sales tax on parts and materials only.

Common Problems and How We Solve Them
My Solitude slide has never sealed properly on one side.
SolutionThe opening is almost certainly out of square. We measure it before touching seals, because seals cannot bridge an uneven gap no matter how new they are.
My Momentum ramp will not close cleanly.
SolutionThe rear frame around the opening has moved. Replacing the hinge or the seal on a distorted opening does not last. The frame gets measured, corrected and reinforced.
The front cap has been resealed and it still leaks.
SolutionResealing over a failed joint treats the symptom. We strip the joint to clean substrate, repair the laminate behind it and rebuild the seam.

Are Grand Design parts available?
Current production body parts are generally orderable with caps built to order on lead times of weeks. On discontinued units we mould fiberglass cap sections in house from the surviving side or a donor pattern.
