Fender and Quarter Panel Repair in Yorba Linda

Fender and quarter panel repair covers wheel arch areas on every vehicle type we handle. On RVs and trailers the most common cause is a tire blowout, which destroys the fender, the surrounding skin and frequently the underlying framing in a single event.

The wheel arch is the hardest working cosmetic area on any vehicle. It gets the road debris, the curb strikes, the salt where people travel through it, and on towables it gets the full force of a tire coming apart at 65 miles an hour.

A trailer tire blowout is genuinely violent. The tread separates and flails at rotational speed, and it removes the fender, tears the sidewall skin above it, damages framing, and frequently takes out wiring, plumbing runs and slide seals in that bay. Repairing the fender alone on a blowout is treating the smallest part of the damage.

What does a tire blowout actually damage?

Starting from the tire and working outward: the fender skirt is usually destroyed, the sidewall skin above and behind it is torn or debonded, the substrate behind that skin is opened to water, framing members in the bay may be bent or cracked, and anything routed through the bay is at risk. That includes 12 volt wiring, water lines, propane lines on some layouts, and slide out seals.

The reason this matters is that blowout damage on the outside looks like a fender problem. The owner sees a missing skirt and a torn section of skin. What they do not see is that the substrate is open, the framing has taken a hit, and the wiring loom in that bay has been beaten against the frame.

Our assessment on a blowout always includes opening the bay rather than assessing from outside. It costs a few hours and it is the difference between a repair and a repair plus an electrical fault three months later that nobody connects back to the tire.

How are RV wheel flares and fenders repaired?

It depends on construction, and RVs use several. Motorhome wheel flares are usually moulded fiberglass bonded or fastened to the sidewall and repaired as fiberglass: grind out the damage to a V, laminate from behind where access exists, fill, shape and refinish. Trailer fender skirts are frequently formed aluminum or moulded plastic and are more often replaced than repaired.

Where the flare integrates into the sidewall rather than bolting to it, the repair extends into the sidewall by definition, and the blend goes with it. This is another case where the refinish area is set by where a legitimate break exists rather than by the size of the damage.

On vans and trucks, quarter panels and fenders are conventional metal work. Steel and aluminum are worked back toward shape, sectioned where the metal is torn or work hardened, and finished. The wheel arch lip is the area that matters most, because a lip that is not correct in profile shows against the tire from every angle.

Why does corrosion show up at wheel arches first?

Because the arch is where moisture, road salt and abrasive debris are constantly thrown at a joint. On steel bodies the lip is a folded seam that traps moisture between two layers, and it rusts from inside the fold outward. By the time bubbling appears in the paint, the metal behind it has been going for years.

The failure of most arch corrosion repair is treating the visible bubble. Cutting out only what you can see leaves the rusted metal inside the fold, and it returns within a couple of years looking exactly as it did before. Proper repair means opening the seam, removing material well past the visible edge until sound metal is reached, then rebuilding the lip and treating the interior surface before it is closed.

On aluminum bodies the equivalent problem is galvanic corrosion where steel fasteners meet aluminum panel, which produces a white powdery deterioration around every fastener in the arch. That is repaired by removing the affected material and reinstalling with correct isolation between the two metals, not by sanding and painting over it.

Common Problems and How We Solve Them

I had a blowout and a shop replaced the fender skirt only.

SolutionThe skirt is the visible part. We open the bay and inspect framing, wiring and plumbing, because blowout damage routinely includes a beaten wiring loom and an opened substrate that will show as a soft floor or an electrical fault later.

Rust keeps coming back at the same wheel arch on my truck.

SolutionThe corrosion lives inside the folded seam and only the visible bubble was cut out. Correct repair removes material past the visible edge into sound metal and treats the interior of the seam before it is closed back up.

The fiberglass flare on my coach is cracked all the way around its mounting flange.

SolutionUsually flex fatigue from a flare bonded to a surface that moves. We laminate the repair from behind, reinforce the flange, and where the mounting method itself is the cause we change how it is attached rather than repeating it.

White powder is forming around every fastener in my aluminum wheel arch.

SolutionGalvanic corrosion between steel fasteners and aluminum panel. Sanding and painting over it restarts the same reaction. The affected material is removed and reinstalled with proper isolation between the two metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does fender or quarter panel repair cost?

Most of this work sits within the $750 to $12,000 body repair band at 5 to 60 labor hours. A simple trailer skirt replacement is at the bottom. A blowout that damaged framing, wiring and sidewall skin can run to the top of it.

Does insurance cover tire blowout damage?

Comprehensive and collision coverage generally covers the resulting damage even though the tire itself is a wear item. We document the full extent including framing, wiring and substrate, because these claims are routinely written from a photo of the missing skirt alone.

Can you make a fender skirt that is no longer available?

Yes. Aluminum skirts are formed in house and fiberglass flares are moulded from a pattern taken off the opposite side of your vehicle, which gives correct curvature and surface texture.

How do I know if a blowout damaged more than the fender?

Open the bay. Signs that it did include lights or systems in that bay behaving oddly, a soft spot in the floor above the wheel well, a slide that stopped sealing on that side, or any visible tear in the skin above the arch.

Is arch rust repair worth doing or should the panel be replaced?

It depends how far it has traveled. Localized corrosion caught early is a straightforward section repair. Corrosion that has run the length of the arch lip and into the inner structure usually costs more to chase than a quarter panel section replacement.
